Interview With Novelist Mike Nemeth

Author of Defiled

1. What inspired you to write the book?
The difference between "justice" under the law and fairness in a specific circumstance. Generic laws, intended to rein in the raucous lives of 330+ million citizens don't always deliver fairness to victims (or perpetrators). That gap, in both the civil and criminal court systems, intrigued me. I chose divorce as the vehicle to highlight the issue because I have some experience with it.. Ah hem.

2. What is it about?
Defiled is about a man who embodies a lost American spirit: the willingness to defy authority when the system gets it wrong and to bend the rules to produce a fair outcome. Randle Marks believes that if it is broken, it is a citizen's duty to force change.  When neither Randle nor his estranged wife get a fair shake from the courts, they battle beyond the boundaries of the legal system and the judges and lawyers lose control of the case.  Their escalating war culminates in a gunfight aboard a motor cruiser on the Gulf of Mexico but then two unexpected twists produce a surprising ending because the cops get involved.

3. What do hope will be the everlasting thoughts for readers who finish your book?
Two thoughts: Don't take it for granted that our current laws and procedures are as good as they can be; and, Don't assume you know how the law will treat you when you get caught up in the meat grinder.  The real justice system is often quite different from what is depicted on TV.  I hope the lasting feeling after reading the book is: system.

4. What advice do you have for writers?
Seek professional help!  Double entendre intended. Wondering if anyone will ever read your words, much less appreciate them, is psychologically taxing.  Find at least one biased reader who will heap praise upon you after each day of writing.  Secondly, get professional publishing help, especially a good editor.  Your manuscript is never as good as it can be.

5. Where do you think the publishing industry is heading?
Today we have chaos: self-publishing, Indie publishing, traditional publishing.  Absolutely everyone is writing a book and everyone can now see their books in print somehow.  The market is flooded and confused.  You can buy a great book for $0.99 and you can get stuck with a clunker for $25.00.  The economics don't work and the market isn't rational because there isn't a link between quality and price and there isn't a link between quality and notoriety.  I think we'll see more tools like this blog used to separate wheat from chaff.

6. What challenges did you have in writing your book?
Story structure was my biggest challenge, ensuring that the characters had a trajectory, that the story revealed its theme while still being an entertaining tale.  Many revisions, and much good advice, produced the end product.

7. If people can only buy one book this month, why should it be yours?
Because the theme and the characters will haunt you for the full month.  Defiled is a fun read, but it will leave you thinking about the institutions that manage our civilization.
