Do You Have Book Marketing DNA?

Book marketing skills – are they something you are born with or are they a learned capability?

No one thinks about this stuff often, but I did find myself wondering if some things just can’t be taught.  They have to be inside of you and nurtured.  Is book marketing one of those things?

To be good at something, you generally have to work at it.  You learn, study, and practice your craft.  You are driven to succeed, either out of necessity or desire, but a passion thrusts you forward. I’m sure some people are born with certain gifts, but there’s no guarantee these gifts can be improved upon and combined to form a strong book marketer.

I think to be good at book marketing you definitely have to work at it, and I also think some people just have it imprinted in their DNA to be great writers, speakers, and marketers.  But it really doesn’t matter if great book promoters got to this point by birth, training, or accident.  What matters is that authors find the great book marketer inside themselves, that they call upon their experiences, skills, and resources to get more attention for their book and brand.

To have a good book marketing IQ, one would benefit from having many of these skills:

·        Friendly and outgoing
·        Energetic and animated
·        Speaks with enthusiasm
·        Good with words
·        Assertive, even aggressive
·        Risk-taker
·        Hard working
·        Focused and determined
·        Strong writer
·        Smooth talker
·        News junkie
·        People savvy
·        Optimistic
·        Good networker
·        Can communicate succinctly, using an economy of words
·        Competitive and goal-oriented

·        Great planner and time-conscious

Many people possess a lot of those skills but they don’t promote books nor even feel comfortable or interested in marketing their brand.  There’s something else one needs to be a strong book marketer.  You have to love books and believe your book is really something special.

So add confidence, courage, and even ego into the mix of what’s needed to succeed at book marketing.  Anyone can market a book as much as anyone can write a book, but some blend of training and birthright will be needed to truly excel at book marketing.
