I’ve spent my whole life watching professional sports contests, often with few winning seasons for the teams and players that I root for. But what I have noted throughout all of those thousands of games, from baseball and football, to basketball and tennis, almost all of the great teams and athletes had one thing going for them: Superior coaching.
Authors take note. Everyone could benefit from a coach.
Of course, our society has a coach for everything. Need to lose weight? Hire a trainer. Need a psychological boost? Try a therapist. Need help decorating your house or someone to help you put a party together – or to date right, cook better, or be a better shopper? There is a consultant for everything.
Certainly when it comes to book publishing, lots of helpers are available, either to do something for you such as edit or promote a book, or to coach you. We have:
Media Coaches – prep you for media interviews.
Writing Coaches – help you write through your blockages or issues.
Book Shepherds – can assist in taking a concept and turning it, into a book.
Each of them can not only teach you something, introduce you to key people, or expose you to new ideas – they can be great sounding boards and true motivators. They can bring out your greatness.
In sports, coaches will:
· Push athletes and teams, through practice, to be better.
· Mentally empower players
· Implement strategy
· Execute a plan
· Deal with the details that can weigh players down.
As such, a book, industry coach can:
· Push you to write and promote better.
· Psychologically nourish and empower you.
· Implement a game plan and strategy.
· Execute a plan to achieve publicity, sales, and success.
· Deal with the details that distract or impede authors.
It may seem ridiculous that a professional athlete, one that may already be an all-star, a champion, and a multi-millionaire, needs a coach, but everyone could be better, even in the slightest way, from having an impartial expert work side by side with them. It’s an advantage or edge that could mean the difference in how far one goes in their career.
Just as in sports, not all coaches are equal. Some are downright awful. You may need to get a coach that helps you pick a coach! But in all seriousness, team up with someone-who can make you better – with advice, words of encouragement, and insights into the things you love but could always be better at.
