Can Books Cure Diseases?

I just learned that there is no FDA-approved cure or treatment for 14,000 known diseases— which represents nearly 80 percent of all known diseases.

Who knew there were so many ways one could die — not including accidents, natural disasters, drugs, suicide, war, terrorism, and murder? And who knew so few diseases have an actual cure or treatment?

Many of the individual untreatable diseases impact few people singularly, but collectively, so many people are afflicted by these diseases. So why am I writing about it?

I started to wonder: Wouldn’t it be great if we put a bigger spotlight on these diseases? What better place to start than with authors and books?

Imagine if more books were published about these diseases, informing and educating readers that they exist and need more resources to be researched and cured.

There can be non-fiction books that inform, advocate, and fundraise. There can be novels with characters or settings that involve these untreatable diseases.

Some books can then become movies. Traditional and social media can further highlight these books and diseases.

Where we focus our time, attention, and money is where we will see progress. If we don’t spotlight these diseases, little will happen in the pursuit of discovering a treatment or cure.

If you need some inspiration about uncovering cures, see the movie Lorenzo’s Oil.

Books can contribute to improving and saving lives. Authors, draft yourself to the cause!
