President Donald Trump made headlines by calling in the
National Guard to Washington, DC. Is he genuinely trying to make the
traditionally crime-riddled area safe? Is he seeking to exert his dictatorial
powers? Might it be a political stunt to embarrass the Dem-run city or an
attempt to have us not focus on the inflation-boosting tariffs, Epstein
scandal, or some other issue?
Perhaps all of the above.
Whatever his reasoning, it sparked an idea: Why
not call in the National Guard to fight the literacy problems in this country?
America can’t read. Send help!
We need an army of help in getting our youth to
not only read for comprehension but for enjoyment and enlightenment. Too many
kids today see reading books as a chore, and not as an empowered choice. Adults
as well.
Test scores, when not down, increase a little due
to reduced standards and grade inflation. We need to do a lot better than
seeing scores of millions who really can’t read or barely get by. Our nation
needs independent thinkers who can read and process facts, opinions, and
fantasies without getting them mixed up.
Too many adults live at an ADHD pace, not able to
focus on reading a book. Further, too many people find surfing through videos
that feature jokes, fighting, dogs, sports, or hot bodies to be so entertaining
that they no longer have the focus, patience or a desire to read a book.
Send in the National Guard. Use them to read books
with struggling readers, to hand out free books, and to encourage people to
read and to not just swipe through social media posts. Maybe by increasing
literacy levels, the National Guard will also bring down crime levels.
