Can Authors Embrace The Tao of Influence?

“What do you need to release? What are you hanging on to that no longer serves you?”

These two questions are posed in author Karen McGregor’s thought-provoking and motivational book, The Tao of Influence. Every author seeking to write and market a book needs to answer them.

McGregor, whose TedX talk has been viewed over one million times, believes we each need to move from our self-centered ways to creating win-win situations to acting selflessly. So how do we do that?

She calls into question 10 key reasons that our ego is engaged, and instead wants us to act out of a higher calling. All authors may start out wanting to write a book for fame, fortune, or validation. But the servant author who is moved to write and market out of a desire to help others, change the world, or give something back, is what we should strive for.

So, start to address the 10 ego traps listed by McGregor. Do you act out of a need to:

·         Seek approval?

·         Be right?

·         Control?

·         Get something from someone?

·         Stay safe?

·         Obtain more possessions?

·         Get more appreciation and recognition?

·         Be liked, even loved?

·         Feel special?

·         Protect against criticism?

Life gets a lot easier when you can unshackle from many of these ego-driven needs. Instead, you can focus purely on others. What can you say or do — or not say or do — that will help others grow? Think that way — and you will find success, or at least feel good trying.

The author suggests that you practice gratitude, accept others for who they are, choose humility, seek forgiveness, embrace silence, and experience the power of prayer.

Whenever we act for the right reasons, we get the right results.

So, dear author, toss out your ego and replace it with something useful. It is okay to have a healthy sense of self; just don’t let your own belief of self-importance serve as your roadblock.
