Positive Book Sales Trends!

Some really interesting and positive trends are developing in the book world, according to an analysis of recent book sales data.

First, total book sales — taking all formats, genres, and retailers into account — are up. Yes, the book industry is clearly growing. It has been for a number of years. People are buying books in droves.

Second, there is solid growth in print book sales that exceeded the rate of impressive growth from the year before last. Print sales jumped 8.2% in 2020 from 2019 — and that was with bookstores shut down for chunks of time and with zero in-store events. In 2021, they grew another 8.9%. Explosive! When print sales rise, it signifies people will go to the bookstore instead of downloading a digital book, and when they are there, they will spend more than they planned on.

Third, younger readers are gobbling up print books, which ensures a love for print later on in life. Board book sales jumped 13% and YA fiction print books soared by 30%!

Fourth, a look at the 25 biggest bestsellers in print in 2021 shows only two titles topped a million copies sold. In 2020, seven such books hit that threshold. This means we didn’t have big anchors gobbling up sales but instead, many books garnered large, but not crazy, numbers.

Fifth, that list of 25 also showed it was heavy on kids books, particularly several series and classics. Books like The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Diary of a Wimpy Kid #16 (Big Shot) filled the list. In fact, a kids book was the nation’s top selling print book — Mothering Heights (Dog Man #10).

Sixth, a right wing book was the top-selling adult print book — American Marxism. Publishers may reconsider their unwritten policies to shun such books.

Seventh, based on the latest week’s sales data, top non-fiction hard cover book sales dwarf those of leading fiction. Each of the top four nonfiction hardcover books outsold the top-selling fiction title. But, it was a lower threshold to hit the hardcover nonfiction list vs fiction. The sales totals of six best-selling hardcover nonfiction books would fail to secure the last spot on the best-seller print fiction list.

Stats can be carved to show all kinds of things but the clear take-away here is sales are up, our youth are reading more books, and print sales are up bigly.

The industry starts 2022 off on the right foot!
