What Goals Should Writers Have?

What specific goals could or should a writer have?

Well, that depends on what stage they are at. Writers evolve over time, both in skill and accomplishment. Abilities change. So do their dreams.

Writers may have a goal spectrum that looks like this:

*Self-publish your first book or two.
*Do a few bookstore signings.
*Build up social media.
*Seek out paid reviews.
*Develop a loyal and growing readership fan base. Collect emails and build your list.
*Hybrid publish.
*Start to earn strong professional and customer reviews.
*Sell a few hundred books.
*Hire a publicist.
*Start speaking for free in front of groups, stores, schools, and libraries.
*Land with a small or university press
*Sell a few thousand books.
*Win or place as a finalist for some lower level awards.
*Find a literary agent.
*Get published by a Big 5 publisher.
*Gain some media attention.
*Win or place as a finalist at big literary awards.
*Become a paid speaker.
*Become a best-selling author.
*Impact lives and change society with your message.
*Start influencing other writers.
*Parlay your books into bigger things: get movie deals, build a consulting business, or a new job.

Repeat and rinse to the point you can be a successful full-time writer.

Keep pushing the goals envelope. Strive to:

* Achieve More?
* Produce Better Books?
* Be Different?

What drives you?

* Career Ladder — build your resume
* Money Grab — make some moolah
* Ego Server — pride and image
* Passion — fulfill your desires
* Purpose — to accomplish something
* Charity — to serve others

Goals need to serve four time spans:

* Long-term — years/decades
* Short-term — 3-6 months
* Immediate — next few weeks
* Daily — next 24 hours and throughout the week

To achieve your goals:

* List them and be specific
* Detail the steps to fulfill them
* Use metrics and benchmarks to measure
* Deadlines
* Have flexibility and the right to change goals and/or strategies to achieve them

Question yourself: What would it take to leapfrog steps and accelerate the process? Can you develop a kind of two-minute football drill, where you act with a sense of urgency?

Ask yourself: Why am I doing what I am doing? Know your why to identify your what.

Reward yourself: give yourself a gift for achieving your goals every step of the way.

Remember, enjoy the journey, celebrate achievement, and dedicate yourself to new goals over time.

Lastly, try a spectrum of goals: Pursue what is truly aspirational and far-reaching — as well as those things that are a sure thing. 80 percent of your time should be spent on what is reasonably achievable — and 20 percent on pie-in-the-sky lottery stuff.
