It’s A Wonderful Book Site!

www.Bookshop.org recently celebrated its second anniversary. We should all rally around them if we hope to keep the book ecosystem honest and flourishing.

Right now, a significant majority of book sales take place on Amazon.com. Think about that.

The United States, a defender of free speech, where millions of new books are sold every year, and where the book is seen as a way for the free flow of information, analysis, ideas, and story-telling to be disseminated, is beholden to one company to dictate how books are priced, what gets sold, and it even influences what gets published.

It is not healthy for any industry to be run by a monopoly that services a cartel (Big 5). Bookshop.org is attempting to break the grip of Amazon on book publishing.

You know, the 75th anniversary of the release of the classic movie, It’s A Wonderful Life, recently passed. The film was a story about the importance of friendship and love, and about greed and sacrifice. It may have been the precursor for understanding the battle for book publishing’s soul: Amazon vs. indie bookstores.

In the film, a miserable old man representing the excesses of capitalism, Mr. Henry Potter, essentially owned the keys to commerce and real estate in the small, fictitious town of Bedford Falls. He owned everyone and everything but one organization — The Bailey Savings & Loan Association — run by a heart-of-gold fella named Harry Bailey. Only one person stood as a barrier to total domination.

Bookshop.org is our Harry Bailey.

We need to support it.

What is it? How does it work!

It is the e-commerce partner for 1323 bookstores. Let’s say you want to order a copy of a book. First choice? Go to your local store. Let’s say you are unable to go there— or just too lazy. Instead of ordering from Potter’s Amazon, order from your local store’s link to Bookshop.org.

According to a recent ad in Publishers Weekly, Bookshop.org asserts its vision as the following: “We want to connect readers with independent booksellers all over the world. We believe local bookstores are essential community hubs that foster, culture, curiosity, and a love of reading, and we’re committed to helping them survive and thrive. Our platform gives independent bookstores tools to compete online and financial support to help them maintain their presence in local communities.”

Amen.
