The
level of the book industry’s use of AI in editing, acquisitions, marketing,
cover design, advertising, social media, and all facets of production-to-market
is not exactly known. But one can assume there is some use of it and such use
will grow and even become mainstreamed.
Will it be used to
completely replace writers? Not completely, not in this immediate 20-year
generation. But AI is getting faster, smarter, and more acceptable to the
public.
Will it be used as a
co-pilot for authors to workshop passages, scenes, settings, and characters?
One can only hope not — but it is inevitable that authors will
increasingly share their creative experience with a machine. Writers will
become editors — rejecting or accepting what a computer creates or revises.
Authors will have the final say and maybe make a few refinements to AI output,
but they will no longer be the sole creator nor will their work have a soul.
Society is becoming
less human by the day. Hate is in the air in a divided America. Machines are
taking over all aspects of our life. And we are entertained by barbary, like
Ultimate Fighting Championships. We will bet on anything, without concern for
how the betting may manipulate the results of real life beyond sports.
Here is another
example of a declining America:
The Enhanced Games,
billed as the Olympics On Steroids, took place this holiday weekend in Las
Vegas. Dozens of elite athletes were invited to win prize money in a contest
that encourages the use of substances most pro leagues have banned. It is like
a Gotham
Villain Showdown
between all of Batman’s arch enemies, only people are rooting for the bad guys
to beat the volunteer crime-fighting hero.
These games are
nothing to celebrate but they are another benchmark in how low society has
gone, with no clear bottom in sight. The depth of human depravity remains to be
seen.
The
drugs these athletes use in the games must be legal, and approved by the
Federal Drug Administration. Everyday cheat drugs, such as testosterone,
Adderall, and human growth hormone, which are banned by the World Anti-Doping
Agency, are not only used here, but they're encouraged for attendees to use.
We should not
sanction such games. We want society to protect us from ourselves. Are there no
limits to where we go to make a buck or be entertained?
What is next: Who
can rape the most women in 72 hours? Can we legalize rioting for a day? Who can
take the most punches until they are knocked into a coma?
Shall we bring back
Gladiator, where prisoners fight to the death? Wouldn’t Survivor get higher
ratings if it were turned into a real Hunger Games?
By you watching
Survivor to the death, you are saying life means nothing, that death entertains
you, that the economy is so messed up that people would risk death and be
rewarded for killing. You encourage others to kill senselessly by watching or
even allowing for it to happen. Or so that’s my own belief. I am sure others
would underwrite and monetize Survivor to the Death if all legal hurdles could
be cleared.
So, wonder no more
about limits to the use of AI in the creation of books. In a nation that pushes
its limits to the lowest form, AI-created books will get sucked into that
vortex because of three simple reasons:
* One can do it, so
they will
* It is legal
* It can make money
So, dear Americans,
unless we each take a stand— politically, legal, socially, or financially— we
will get things like The Enhanced Games and AI-crafted books.
We are on a
trajectory for self-destruction.
