1. What inspired you to write this book? The existential nature of climate change and the fact that we are not adequately responding to it.
2. What exactly is it about — and who is it written for? The book is written for people who want to respond to climate change, in particular this next generation of environmental activists, who have to change their approach to global advocacy through the Internet and social media.
3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? I hope they understand that nature has a consciousness, is asking for help and will send guides to assist. This process of dealing with global warming is an adventure!
4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? We are all, as human beings, literally Nature’s Allies, and the whole planet is in jeopardy; therefore, a picture of the planet is on the book cover.
5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!? Tell the truth. Regardless.
6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? There is a large and growing market for environmental books and memoirs. "Nature’s Ally" is both.
7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book? Definitely. Representing 1,000 victims in the Bhopal, India gas disaster, the worst industrial accident of the 20th century, taught me about the threat of industrial society to the environment, and that Nature has a consciousness; representing the town of Casmalia, California against the Casmalia toxic waste dump, accepting toxic waste from as far away as Los Angeles, taught me about the threat of toxicants to our environment; being the President of No Oil Inc. a voluntary group (NIMBY) which stopped Armand Hamer and Occidental Petroleum from drilling 60-100 oil wells across from the Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades, California, taught me you can successfully fight “City Hall;” co-founding American Oceans Campaign (AOC) with Ted Danson and running the organization for a decade taught me about the environmental threats to our oceans, how to use Congress in the environmental fight and how to oppose and both work with the oil and gas industry, how to work with celebrities and the media in the context of environmental preservation; being both the Campaign Chair for the Alliance for Rio Grande Heritage and the environmental director for the Eight Northern Indian Pueblo in New Mexico, taught me about fresh water shortages and the struggle for the resource, coalition advocacy and how to work with First Nations on environmental issues; being the CEO of he South Coast Clean Air Partnership, taught me about how to work with the oil industry in creating low-sulfur diesel fuels working with recyclers to use legislation to create California law mandating the recycling of used motor oil; being the CEO of OCWISE (Orange County Water Sustainability) taught me how to work with administrative agencies to create new fresh water through ocean desalination.
In "Nature’s Ally," I wrote
about all of these experiences and techniques on how to fight climate change.
8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? My writing style is straightforward and accessible. My writing is similar to the following books: “An Environmental Leader’s Tool Kit," "Climate Optimism: Systematic Change,” and “Working to Restore: Power of Regenerative Business."
9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? Making the topic accessible and understandable for readers.
10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? Because global warming is an imminent threat as shown by the fires burning out of control around the globe as I am sending you this response. It’s because of the overheating of our planet.
