Interview with Author David Gardner

1. What inspired you to write this book?

I was born in a country with huge and strong traditions where sexual minorities live still in a closet to stay alive and socialize themselves. They are hiding their identity, their feelings, and even their love because society does not accept them. They are persecuted, unprotected, and scared.  I got inspiration when I saw Pride in New York City and decided to write a novel, that could awaken compassion in those who hide themselves in a closet, who can’t shout how deep is their love. I want to reinforce that they have the right to be the person they want.

2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for?

“Apples of Paradise” is about an unusual, forbidden love behind the curtain of war. The book is dedicated to everyone who can fall in love and who can be loved.

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book?

They will dive into an interesting story and see that despite their sexual preferences everyone

deserves to live their lives.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design?

As a forbidden love, for me, it symbolized the forbidden fruit which was eaten as a fruit of passion and thereafter cognited something you never thought about. The cover design was offered by the publishing company and was approved by me.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!?

Never give up your dreams. Think widely, sharpen your imagination, and write.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?

In the process of learning about the situation in the book business, I found out that for many reasons, the indie book industry has become stronger and stronger compared to traditional houses.

7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book?

I used to work at the newspapers as a journalist in Georgia. Besides at the University, I had a full course in dramaturgy which always is very useful when I decide to write something. I think the knowledge of how to build the plot is very important for everyone.

8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to?

It is my first book in English and I think it is very early to talk about my writing style. Let’s talk about this after my third or fourth book, published in the United States.

9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book?

The main challenge was the language, but I had a huge desire to be published in America and it overcame everything.

10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?

In my opinion, nowadays there is a time when literature should talk about eternal themes such as love, friendship, betrayal, etc. If someone wants to find the real emotions and feelings of ordinary people who struggle to find and explore themselves, my book is a perfect choice among thousands of books on the shelves and online world.
