If anyone has heard the great song, Dream On, by Aerosmith, they would notice a distinct line in the song. It says:
“You got to lose to know how to win.”
Just what does that line mean and how should authors embrace it?
That line, to me, is saying that you can acquire what it takes to win after trying something and failing. We must learn from our mistakes, toughen up, make adjustments, and try another path.
He is also saying you need to pursue victory. He doesn’t say to watch others and then you will win. He says you will win even if at first you lose, perhaps especially if you first lose. But you need to be in it to win it. Play the game.
Dream On is a powerful ballad
by classic rock band Aerosmith. It appears on their debut album 50 years
ago. Written by lead singer Steven Tyler, their song was the
group’s first major hit. Perhaps it can be a rallying cry for writers as well.
