What happens when you are idealistic and believe in something that can also be used with bad intentions? What would you do when you have to choose between your values and freedom?
The answers to these two questions play out in a stimulating new play, Bitcoin Bad Boy, at the Chain Theatre in New York City. Its limited run ends this week.
The story revolves around a young man, released from prison on a presidential pardon deal orchestrated by his family, who believes in the power of crypto to counter government control of money. He quickly finds out the terms of his deal will help some corrupt people to profit while others lose their life savings. What follows is a high-stakes drama about what is right and wrong in the world of finance.
Influenced by real events, Bitcoin Bad Boy draws on the history of crypto, placing big themes in the context of a family drama.
Inspired by more than a decade covering the crypto industry, including his six years as Managing Editor at CoinDesk, Ben Schiller's Bitcoin Bad Boy is the sequel to Happenstance, the first Bitcoin play, which Schiller staged in the East Village in 2024. It is directed by Cuban-American and theater-maker Meg Gomez-Campbell.
"I watched this industry go from being
pretty far out there to the center of American politics," said Schiller.
"The play is about how a true believer deals with the new reality where
crypto is supported by the White House."
Attendees will guess right until the end about
the fate of the main character — and long after will be questioning or debating
the merits and potential of bitcoin.
