What type of books do you write? I
write anything really. I am a children's and adults author so my writing is
quite varied. However, I am a fan of twisted humor and psychological thrillers.
What is your newest book about? It's an adults comedy fiction book about a
middle aged man, Norman Wallace, who has a secret hobby as a drag-queen. He has
to perform at The Ball & Wicket on Friday evening, which falls on his
mother-in-law's 80th birthday, which creates ultimate uproar with his family!
What inspired you to write it? Well, I suppose quite a lot of things really
but if I could sum this answer up in a phrase I would say "it's not what
you know, it's who you know!"
What is the writing process like for you? I adore writing the manuscript as I am always
getting ideas; the aftermath with sending cover letters and synopses to
publishers isn't too great as I hate being anxious during the waiting period
but I do enjoy creating stories with all the interesting characters that go
with it.
What did you do before you became an author? I was training to become a nurse. I was at
studying at University while working at the hospital for my training and I
absolutely loved it. Unfortunately that became short-lived as I developed
epilepsy and I am still uncontrolled annoyingly enough. It is disheartening
that I had to stop my nursing but I wouldn't be where I am now!
How does it feel to be a published author? Well, when I was little I always imaged myself
as two things; either a nurse or an author. I wrote my first novel with 50
chapters in at the age of 14 but then decided to concentrate on my nursing
career as I never thought being an author was possible. It wasn't until 2012
that I decided to give my writing a go and won 2 poetry competitions and had
'Alex and the Alien' and 'Hannah says Hello!' released. Since then I have had
'Alex and the Alien: A trip to the Moon!', 'Brainstorming', 'The car won't
start. Love, Dad' and another anthology published and I have to say it is
pretty great! I love seeing my name on the front cover of these books; I guess
dreams can come true!
Any advice for struggling authors? Yes!!! Never give up and get used to
rejections. Once you have accepted both of those, you will be fine. I got
rejected so many times but I was determined to have my books out there. If you
have a story that you're ready to share with everyone, write to publishing
houses, literary agencies or have a look at independent publishing houses.
