In reading Hook Point: How to Stand Out In A 3-Second World, one feels it is a daunting task to be able to make an impression in a crowded, noisy world where the marketplace of ideas, hums along through social media, speaking events, news media, advertisements, newsletters, and so many other content-distribution means. But, the book by Brendan Kane does provide a way for us to think about how to craft a message that sticks out. Still, if many people read and adopt his book’s teachings, we will again have the burden of finding a way to be heard.
Is there such a thing as a perfect message? Even with such a message in hand, will you get heard?
Let’s start with the substance and style of your message. Some of the tips offered in the book for having a message that sticks out include these:
1. Know what the ultimate outcome of your book is, meaning what does your book promise to do for the reader? Do you identify pain avoided or pleasure gained as a result?
2. Take a community-held belief or phrase – as they relate to your book – and flip them on their heads.
3. Associate your brand or message with timely, interesting topics that meet your readers’ needs.
4. Figure out the latest cultural trends that relate to your book and try to make bold predictions.
5. Find ways to package your information that makes it more accessible. Share it in bite-size chunks.
6. Make sure your message has logic, provides value, gives off charm, has a sense of humor, and indicates feelings of compassion.
7. Speak to a higher purpose – why do we exist? What do we value? What do you want to hear? Talk about the goals of others and how to achieve them.
8. Connect with others through emotion, shock, utility, or deep meaning.
9. Raise curiosity or make a bold statement.
10. Address the fears, desires, or needs of others.
You need a hook – something that quickly makes
someone feel drawn to you. If you can’t hook ‘em in, they won’t listen beyond a
few seconds, won’t read your book, and won’t want to engage you. Find something
to highlight, shout about, and rally around.
