Why Do Some Writers Break Through, While Others Just Break?

There is a lot of talent in America, from singers, comedians, and dancers, to athletes, actors, and writers. But only some get to perform professionally, and only a handful get to star. Why?

You may come at me with all kinds of reasons, including:

Connections — getting a break from someone you know

Money — to train, travel, or take risks

Luck — needs no explanation

Health — mental or physical abilities/injuries

Sacrifices — caregiving demands

Looks — youth/sex appeal/strength

Practice — working hard and smart relentlessly

DNA — natural abilities and birth-based skills

Attitude — how you see things and what you project to others

But really, what separates another on the talent spectrum? For authors, marketing is the big differentiator, not in making one’s writing talent better, but in positioning them to be more successful than other writers.

So, for whatever reason you are an exceptional writer, to garner exceptional results in getting published, securing book sales, and drawing positive public recognition, you must market, market, and market some more.

It may take a village. You can only do so much, but make sure you are contributing all that you can. Fill in where you lack by outsourcing to talented pros in book marketing and book publicity. Be ready to trade, beg, borrow, raise donations, call in a favor, or pay for what you will need for your book to succeed.
