Did you see that the recent New York City Marathon was won by a
runner by just 3/100ths of a second? How insane is that? He won by a single
stride out of tens of thousands of strides over several hours, defeating over
50,000 competitors.
This
is a lesson here for authors.
First,
every step that you take, literally, has value. No stride towards the finish
line is too small. Make every effort to market your books, as often as
possible.
Second,
not much separates winners and success stories from the rest of your
competitors. Think about the margin of victory in that marathon. It is time to
realize that competition for your book is fierce, but sometimes it only takes a
little more effort or success to elevate your book. You don’t have to do five
big things better than others; it may just come down to one small thing.
Third,
staying close to your competitors allows you to be in a position to seize an
opportunity to surge ahead. Don’t give up on your marketing and stay
competitive.
There
is a lot of evidence that small amounts of extra effort can make a huge
difference in an author’s success. Think about it.
Look
at amazon bestseller lists. Sometimes authors needed to sell just one or two
more books in a given hour in order to make the list. Every sale counts.
Look
at your efforts to land a speaking engagement or news media appearance. It may
just take an extra call, email, or knock on a door to achieve what you are
pursuing.
Every
step literally counts— in life, in sports, and in book marketing.
