America is approaching a population of 350 million people as it turns 250 years old. The demographics have shifted in the first quarter of this new millennium and it is important that authors and publishers know where they should be promoting their books.
Below is a list of the top 15 cities by population. Additionally, we look at six other major counties or metropolitan areas that you won’t want to miss. So, if you are looking for news media exposure, public events, or advertising, you will want your message in front of these big clusters. Be aware, things have changed.
Places that you had thought of as big are no longer in that top tier. Cleveland, San Francisco, Detroit, St. Louis, and Baltimore have each either declined or failed to grow faster than so many other places – and are not on the list.
1.
New York City 8.58
million
2.
Los Angeles 3.87 million
3.
Chicago 2.73 million
4.
Houston 2.4 million
5.
Phoenix 1.67 million
6.
Philadelphia 1.57
million
7.
San Antonio 1.55
million
8.
San Diego 1.41 million
9.
Dallas 1.33 million
10. Fort Worth 1.03 million
11. Jacksonville 1.02 million
12. Austin 1 million
13. San Jose 990,000
14. Charlotte 960,000
15. Columbus 940,000
Further, there are some enormous counties, such as Miami with 2.8 million, Broward (Ft. Lauderdale) 2 million, and Palm Beach with 1.58 million people. Long Island has over 2.83 million people. Nashville has 726,000 people but its broader metropolitan area has 2.15 million people in total. Boston has 675,00 people, but Greater Boston metro has 5.02 million people.
Remember, strategically target your
marketing efforts to track down you perceived readership, but all things being
equal, market into the more populated areas and seek to capitalize on any
opportunities of actually visiting those places.
