Vintage Car Show Offers Book Marketing Lessons

A few months ago, I attended an outdoor vintage car show with my 16-year-old, car-enthusiast son. It was an amazing display of millions of dollars worth of cars owned by collectors and hobbyists.

We saw scores of colorful cars, ranging from 100 years old to some snazzy cars of this millennium. We loved the show, comparing features from one model and era to another, marveling at the evolution of the auto right before us.

However, the dizzying display of cars left us struggling to zero in on anyone car. They were cannibalizing each other. It was like being in a room full of gorgeous female models. Who stands out when everyone is beautiful?

Well, authors have the same challenge. Their books are stacked on bookstore shelves as well as on Amazon’s online shelves. How does a book get its due?

Authors are the mascots for their books. They give voice to their creation. They must cheerlead and make their presence known. Speak up on social media. Hand out fliers on the street corner. Post on a blog or hold court on their podcast. Submit to book reviewers. Advertise. Apply for book awards. Seek out news media interviews. Do paid reviews. Give out free copies. Beg, trade for, or buy favors. Get creative and do what others fail to do. Just get up and get out there!

Interesting to note, many of the cars on display were ordinary in their day but they survived time. Their rarity becomes appealing, especially in contrast to the uniform boringness of so many of today’s cars. Endurance and persistence count. Just showing up is half the battle.

Rev up your engine, dear author, and hit the road. You may just reach your destiny.

Interview with Author Helen Horyza

  1. What really inspired you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and conveying it into a book?

I was inspired by my clients. Over the past thirty years I have had the privilege of helping virtually thousands of people find greater satisfaction in their lives and their careers. It is brave to aspire to your potential. It’s easy to settle and give up. I wanted to ignite a spark of hope and grit, enabling as many people as possible to elevate their career. I also knew that my Elevate Career Cycle model would be an excellent foundation for the book. Additionally, the Cycle has helped so many people get unstuck. I wanted to get it out to the world.

2.What is it about and whom do you believe is your targeted reader?
Elevate Your Career:  Live a Life You’re Truly Proud Of is about the Twenty-First Century labor market. I describe both the opportunities and the threats to your satisfaction, stability and success. Then the book presents my Elevate Career Cycle which offers insight into the psychology of career transitions and the strategic actions that will allow anybody get unstuck and on the road to their potential. As I describe the Cycle, I offer real life stories of people in the different stages. I end the book with a plea for readers to do what they are gifted to do. The reader is then invited to take my Elevations career assessment for free and to subscribe to my YouTube channel. This gives the reader abundant information and resources for long-term healthy career development.

My targeted read is under-employed, unemployed or folks who hate their job. This book has a wide audience from mature teens seeking a direction, to young adults suffering their quarter-life crisis in their mid-twenties, to gen Y, gen X, boomers and beyond.

3. What do you hope will be the everlasting thoughts for readers who finish your book? What should remain with them long after putting it down?
Career upheaval is normal, predictable and can be navigated towards growth and transformation.
Career success requires grit and persistence.
You must be accountable for your career, no employer, government or economy with take care of you.
There is dignity in doing work that provides for your life/family.
Always keep striving toward your potential.

4. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers?
First, write because you have something to say. I long knew I wanted to write a book but I was not ready. Over the past couple of years the structure of the book and the message became clear. All the bunny trails I had considered as book topics fit into the larger structure that became my EYC book. I encourage writers to find an editor or writing coach to stay on track and improve the quality of your book. Also, remember that no one cares about your book as much as you do. You will be the driver of the marketing, PR and social outreach.

One last thought, I released my book mid-January 2020. Soon thereafter, the pandemic shut-down traditional promotional avenues. I felt stuck for a while but eventually found a great book PR firm. TV interviews, book reviews, blog articles etc. can all be done virtually. Now my book is getting both national and international exposure. So, never give up and find a way to reach your audience.

5. What trends in the book world do you see and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?

I mentioned one big trend in my previous answer. Book signings, public speaking, etc. has vanished in it’s traditional format. Authors need to be both comfortable and effective in video formats. Public speaking on Zoom can be done! TV interviews, magazine interviews, etc. can all be done remotely. I now feel lucky because I don’t have to take a plane to get to the communication sources. This is a very current and positive trend.

The trend toward totally independent author-driven publishing seems risky to me. There is so much noise in the media between health issues, elections, fires and floods…I’m not sure self-publishing makes sense. I used a hybrid approach where is have a publisher with expertise to come to market at a very professional level but I own the book and get all the proceeds. I think this is the best route for less experienced authors like me.

6. What challenges did you overcome to write your book?
I’m a bit embarrassed to admit how little I knew about the elements inherent in a solid non-friction book. I needed to be “coachable” taking my editor’s advice every step of the way. I had to overcome my own worries that is might not be good enough (what ever that means). I wanted the book to be well written and readable. I had to overcome my doubts that I was capable of that. I also lost all of my income in the stretch of time that I was writing the book and in the first couple of months after releasing it due to budget short-falls, contract cancellations and most recently the pandemic shut-down. If I was not so far along in writing my book when I lost my biggest contract in October 2019, I might have given up. But, I live what I wrote in my book. I kept writing and have re-invented my career. I am opening the Career Coach Entrepreneurs Academy, a certificate program for people who want to become career coaches. I suspect that many authors in 2020 have a similar story to mine.

7. If people can only buy one book this month, why should it be yours?

Your career is central to your ability to pay for everything in your life, to your financial stability, your health, your sense of fulfillment, your relationships and your legacy. The importance of making a great career choice and riding out the transitions successfully cannot be over stated. Buy Elevate Your Career: Live a Life You’re Truly Proud Of this month and then you will have the money and the fortitude to buy other books in the future.

Do We Need To Fight Book Pricing Deflation?

Inflation across America is growing at its fastest pace in nearly four decades. But the official number is not accurate. Things are worse than the numbers say. Some things are doubling in price at a rate similar to how fast Omicron seems to spread. Ask anyone who bought an appliance, car, or house — or pays for healthcare, college tuition, a meal, or gas. But amidst soaring inflation on just about everything, one thing seems to have stagnated: book prices.

On the one hand, keeping books affordable ensures more purchases, greater readership, and a more literate society. On the other hand, writers can barely afford to write, and many publishers are becoming more conservative in taking risks on who and what they publish. For the industry to grow, we need to fix the ecosystem.

The main problem, as I see it, is that too many books are:

*Given out for free.
*Sold as e-books for 99 cents.
*Starting with a low sticker price.
*Used as a loss-leader to achieve some other result.

There is a conflict going on here. For the industry, free books flood the market, leaving consumers less time to read books that they might buy. But for individual authors, free is a great way to build a brand.

Similarly, selling a book at a low price creates one less barrier to readers taking a chance on buying a book, but the artificially low prices spoil readers into expecting to pay sub-minimum wage amounts for all books. Further, these e-reader discounts create such a disparity in price to printed books that we are raising readers to ignore print for dirt-cheap digital. Bookstores and publishers lose when print book sales aren’t robust.

Many paperback books, especially those put out by small indie presses and self-published authors, are priced low in hopes of getting more people to buy in. But people will not invest their time in a book unless they think it will be worthwhile. Sometimes, a low price hints at a book to be of low quality. Don’t do it. You won’t make money that way.

Now, some authors gladly don’t care if they make money from a book. They have a different agenda. For instance, especially in the case of a non-fiction book written by a professional services provider — lawyer, financial planner, doctor, CEO, motivational speaker, consultant — the book is s calling card. It is intended as a lead generator for clients and customers of their business. Others use the book as a branding tool or a way to get attention for a story, idea, or issue of importance to the author.

In all of the above scenarios, authors feel they are winning, but the industry as a whole, loses from it.  There is no easy answer, but prices across the board must rise. It is the only way to ensure a healthy marketplace for the long-term.

Your book marketing plan can be your blueprint for success, but be ready to adjust it as needed.

Interview with Author Robert L. Dilenschneider

1. What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and turning it into this book? The world is moving so quickly today and little is the same as 5 years ago.  M goal was to inspire young people because they are our future and we need them to pick up the baton.   I’ve written 14 books, a lot about career advice, shaping opinion and learning from the past and masters of their game.

2. What is it about and who is it for?  I have always looking to figures in history for lessons.  So in this book I look at 25 people and the lessons we can gather from them when they were 25 years old.   And how these 25 people can inspire young people around the world.

3. What takeaways might the reader will be left with after reading it? I want the reader to feel inspired and determined to remained focus.. to feel they too can make a difference.. they can play a role in making this Country’s future bright.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? We wanted this book to really relate to young people.    We went to book stores almost every week to see what the latest titles looked like given the challenges of getting a book sold these days.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers? This is the moment, if you have advice and counsel, that you share it with as far and wide an audience as possible.   So much is different.  So many feel the world is turned upside.   We need focus.  We need leadership..  So let’s get out there and share our wisdom.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?    It certainly is a tough time for the industry.    I see more books/ but likely more being sold as ebooks.   I enjoy a good book. I like holding a book.     That’s not the same for young people today.. they like a paperless society.  So look for more companies likes audible.com to make their mark and offer different services while sending along a book.

7. What challenges did you overcome to write this book? There were hundreds of people who qualified to be in this book.  So it took longer than expected to narrow the group down the 25.   25 who would really relate to a younger audience while still of interest to a wider audience.

8. How would you describe your writing style? I like to write in short, fact filled sections.   I find it keeps the attention of the reader.

9. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?    Because they can change the world just as these other 25 somethings did.    They will feel inspired and they will definitely learn something new.. ..some of the people highlighted have never been talked about yet they made a significant mark on the world.
