I love writers. I am one myself. But I need to give a little tough love to my brethren, for I see an ugly trend that needs to be extinguished before it spreads so deep into the author’s psyche that it becomes imprinted into one’s DNA.
I am talking about the writer who will write — but then walk away from those writings.
They create, but they don’t market.
They simply won’t take the time, spend the money, make the effort, or even give it any mental accounting. Marketing has become distant, vague, and illusory to many authors, not because it is naturally so, but because they make it so.
I talked to an author the other day. He said he wants to market his book, but has a small budget, little time to do anything, and is too preoccupied with life to focus on it.
Well, that sir, is a recipe for failure.
Imagine having a baby, and saying: “Oh, I just had a baby girl. She is so cute, but can someone just raise her? I don’t feel like it, can’t afford it, and my schedule is a bit busy with other things.”
We know we can’t expect something for nothing, and yet, that is exactly what too many authors demand these days.
I kinda get the logic behind it. Authors are just wishing, dreaming, and hoping that their book, on merit, somehow gets discovered and lobbied for by influencers to the masses, who embrace their book as if it were the second coming of Christ.
Folks, I cannot tell a lie nor encourage you to embrace the one you may be telling yourself.
Get real. Just as your book won’t write itself, it won’t market itself either. The formula is simple: If you market consistently, frequently, and wisely, you will achieve positive results. Before you can hope for strong word-of-mouth sales, you need to seed enough people with your message in order to have a foundation of supportive readers.
I know that many authors want success to come that is cheap, easy, and fast. Unfortunately, that just isn’t how it works for books and authors. But you can make things happen. All that you need to do is change your attitude, free up some time, and open your purse.
