Millions of writers could use a good sermon in the church of book publishing. Those who dare practice the craft of painting with words face tough odds to get published, gain positive critical reviews, win awards, and sell a decent number of books. They fear rejection and endure an uphill battle to market their books. It takes a lot of time, energy, mindshare, and sacrifice to be a writer. They need Rabbi Brian Feinblum to lead them to the mountain top.
Ok, I feel in the sermon zone right now. I
am in the middle of a 10-day period known as the Jewish Holidays. It starts
with a happy new year, according to the lunar calendar used for 5,785 years,
and ends with Yom Kippur, the holiest and saddest day of the year. It is a
period of reflection, judgment, penance, and renewal. In the next 10 days I
will hear more sermons than I likely will hear for the rest of 2024.
Authors need to hear something that will uplift
them, guide them, encourage them to look in the mirror, and inspire them to do
better. Who will lead this flock of souls who come from every walk of life, in
every size and shape, of every ethnicity, faith, age, and class?
Does God love authors?
Many writers challenge the very existence of a god
and most are critical of the world a god may have created. I believe in God. I
also believe in writers. And I believe humanity can find a way to overcome
itself and flourish.
Dear writer, you are here on Earth for many
reasons, some perhaps not even so clear to you. One of them, perhaps the most
important one, is to write the books that will help others. Your books may
entertain, enlighten, inspire, inform, raise questions or do something for and
to another. And as a result, if people act better, feel better, and become
better, you have done a mitzvah (good deed). You are a servant to humanity.
We, all people, in my opinion, have a piece of God
in each of us, and we collectively, are a piece of God. To write and help
others, even if just to bring a smile, heal a wound, or inspire one to do
better, is to make the world a better place.
Writers need a lot to succeed— to possess
conviction to write what they believe, the courage to share their writings with
others, a resilience to handle rejection or criticisms, and the fortitude to
market their books. Please, keep at it. Shut the negativity and fear out.
Embrace the creative force within you and share your gift with others. The
world needs you.
