Tattered Book Dreams

 

 

Denver’s Tattered Cover, one of the best indie bookstores of the last few generations, was purchased by Barnes and Noble this past year. Luckily, they did not go out of business, but it is a loss of a different kind.

And yet it comes on the heels of long-term indie bookstore growth that has occurred over the past decade and a half. Today’s indie bookstore struggles to survive, but it does indeed chug along, and more are opening than closing in each of the past 15 years.
 

Independent booksellers continued to expand in 2023, even amid slowing industry sales. Book Riot reported earlier this year that:  “There were more than 200 new independent bookstores registered with the American Booksellers Association last year than in 2022. And there are twice as many now as there were in 2016.” 

According to USA Today, “The organization (American Booksellers Association), founded in 1900 and representing more than 2,500 independent bookstores, saw its membership grow by 11% in 2023 as 291 bookstores opened: 230 brick-and-mortar stores, 34 pop-ups, 18 online sites and nine mobile stores.”
