Interview With Award-Winning Children’s Book Author Deborah Bradbury

1. What inspired you to write this book? My love for storytelling and education has always been at the heart of my writing. I find inspiration in the world around me—whether it’s my experiences as a teacher, my curiosity about nature, or even moments with my own family. Writing allows me to blend creativity with my passion for teaching, and it’s incredibly rewarding to bring science to life for young readers in a fun and engaging way.

2. What exactly is it about — and who is it written for? Gets Gutsy!, follows three adventurous crows—Casper, Coco, and Cash—as they embark on an extraordinary journey through the digestive system. Equipped with Coco’s amazing super safety suit, they shrink down to explore how food travels through the body, making science exciting and accessible. This book is designed for children aged 6–9, as well as parents, teachers, and educators looking for a fun yet educational resource. It aligns with key science curriculum standards, offering a blend of vivid illustrations, interactive storytelling, and memorable facts that make learning enjoyable both at home and in the classroom.

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? I hope Gets Gutsy sparks curiosity and excitement for science! My goal is to make learning about the digestive system fun, engaging, and easy to understand. Whether children are reading it for enjoyment or as part of their science curriculum, I want them to come away feeling inspired and eager to explore more about how their bodies work.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? I wanted a title that was playful and intriguing, something that would instantly spark curiosity. Since my characters shrink and travel through the digestive system, I thought an eye-catching image of them tumbling into the oesophagus would make young readers eager to dive into the adventure. The bold, colorful design is meant to capture their imagination and excitement!

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!? Believe in your story and keep going! Writing a book is a journey filled with ups and downs, but persistence and passion will carry you through. Stay patient, embrace feedback, and most importantly—enjoy the process!

6. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book? Absolutely! As a primary school teacher, I’ve always loved sparking curiosity in young minds. I’ve seen firsthand how storytelling can make even the most complex topics engaging and relatable. My experience in the classroom played a huge role in shaping this book, ensuring it’s both educational and fun.

7. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? My writing style is lively, engaging, and packed with adventure. I love using humor, relatable characters, and vivid storytelling to bring science to life. If you enjoy books that mix education with fun—think The Magic School Bus or Operation Ouch!—then Gets Gutsy is right up your alley!

8. How do you feel your book compares to others in your genre? While there are many great educational books out there, Gets Gutsy takes a different approach by blending an exciting storyline with science. Instead of relying solely on facts, it uses humor, adventure, and quirky characters to keep young readers entertained while they learn. It’s a fantastic resource for families, schools, and libraries—perfect for anyone who loves stories that make learning fun!

9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? One of the biggest challenges was ensuring scientific accuracy while keeping the story engaging and accessible for young readers. I worked closely with a senior lecturer in nursing at a UK university to make sure all the facts were correct. Balancing education with entertainment was key, and I wanted to make sure children would enjoy the adventure just as much as they’d learn from it.

10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? Gets Gutsy! is more than just a book—it’s an adventure into the human body! It offers:
. A fun and engaging way to learn about science through storytelling and humor.
. Curriculum alignment, making it a fantastic resource for parents and teachers.
. A spark for curiosity, encouraging kids to ask questions and explore the wonders of their own bodies. If you’re looking for a book that makes science exciting and accessible for young readers, this is the perfect pick!
