Use Quotations To Lift Your Book

I picked up a copy of The Little Book of Positive Quotations, compiled by Steve Deger and Leslie Ann Gibson, while roaming a Barnes & Noble in Stamford, CT.  Quotation books instantly move us and allow us to feel something.  Turn to any page.  Look at any line.  You’re bound to immediately read something that challenges you, that moves you, and that either affirms or negates your news and perceptions.

It’s always interesting to see how many quotes tend to get repeated from quotation book to quotation book – and how many quotes differ from one another.  It makes sense that many quote compilers love similar quotes – that’s the sign of a great, insightful quote.  But it also makes sense that we dig to find less common but equally powerful sayings that ring true and forceful.  We each can use a reminder and a motivating quote to push us higher.

Many books quote other books or open chapters with a quote.  It’s what we do – we like to write original material but we also like to link ourselves to great ideas or great people.  Input in, output out.  Writers are editors, too, filtering the information they come upon, such as quotes and handoff the few quotes they want others to experience and live with.

Will someone quote you someday?  What will your quote be?

Here are some quotes that I came across in The Little Book of Positive Quotations.  I hope they inspire or motivate you as they do me.

“The teacher is one who makes two ideas grow where only one grew before.”
-Elbert Hubbard

-Henry Ford

“The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.”
-John Milton
