The First Four Centuries of Book
Production
In 1822, a
statistician calculated that during the four centuries since the invention of
printing in 1456, the number of works printed were distrusted as follows:
First century 42,000
Second century 575,000
Third century 1,225,000
Fourth century 1,839,960
Total 3,681,960
Assuming that each
edition averaged 300 copies, and each three volumes, it gives a grand total of
3,313,764,000 books.
