The Kentucky Derby, where the best horses of the wealthiest
owners have competed for nearly a century-and-a-half, was the site of an
amazing shocker this year. The longest of longshots won in dramatic
come-out-of-nowhere fashion. Though I don’t follow nor bet on the races, I can
appreciate what this victory represents — for authors.
When someone — be it horse jockey, job applicant,
or author — is told they are not good enough, that they are viewed as being
unqualified or incapable of success — he or she is made to feel like crap. But
sometimes, through anger or conviction, the underdog rises to the top.
Want to see something get done. Say it can’t be
done or that a specific individual is not up to the task. You make them better
in that moment. Nothing uplifts another more than to challenge them.
Where some may feel defeated under the crushing
weight of criticism or low expectation, others rise to the challenge to prove
their critics wrong.
How many authors feel like longshots but want
their chance to shine, to affirm they provide value, and to prove the critics
wrong? How many times are authors proven they are worthy and how many live down
to the minimal expectations others had for their writings? Who will be right —
literary agents and publishers who passed on you? Critics who say your book is
lacking? Friends and family who showed doubt instead of support? Teachers who
lacked foresight and failed to recognize your talent?
Or, will you be the one proven correct, to be
given every right to boast of your book?
Authors, you are the longest of longshots — but
you have a chance to win, just like Rich Strike, the 80-1 winner of this year’s
Kentucky Derby. Show others that you deserve to be seen and enjoyed. Believe in
yourself, especially when no one else would.
