Here are eight things authors would benefit from knowing:
- To sell to the library market, your book needs to be
available via major wholesales and distributors. Baker & Taylor, owned
by Follett corporation, is the dominant one. Follett is the largest
distributor of books to K-12 schools. Publishers that want to try to reach
libraries may attend the American Library Association Conference and Exhibition.
There is also a midwinter meeting.
2. Some of the fastest-growing independent publishers during parts of 2016-2020, according to Publishers Weekly includes:
·
Wolfpack Publishing
·
Blue Star Press
·
The Innovation Press
·
Mango Publishing
·

·

job in the book industry, check out linked in, Publishers Lunch, Media Bistro,
and Bookjobs.
4.
If you want to learn
more about publishing, explore these programs: New York University’s Summer
Publishing Institute, Columbia University’s Publishing Course, Denver Publishing
Institute, and LA Review of Books Publishing Workshop.
5. Major book reviews that require three to four
months lead time prior to your book’s publication date include these:
·
Booklist
·
Kirkus Reviews
·
Library Journal
·
Publishers Weekly
·
NPR.org/books
·
Foreword Magazine
·
Midwest Book Review
·
Independent Publisher
·
Book Page
·
American Book Review
·
Chicago Tribune Books
·
LA Times Book
Review
·
NY Times Book Review
6. Take the right approach to your use of key words
when posting on social media and on your website. Look for:
·
Exact key words that
match what you want.
·
Seek out lesser known
but similar-meaning terms.
·
Look at phrases -- not
just singular words.
·
Look for brand
association clusters of key words.
·
Use negative key words
(words that come with a minus sign so you can benefit from filtered searches).
7. Use free content in the public domain. For written works published before 1923, all is fair game. A copyright snafu allows you to republish such works. Further, works created before 1978 that were published without a copyright notice are permanently in the public domain. You can sell, give away, or quote from these books.
8. If you are an indie publisher or self-published
author and need distribution, try these companies:
·

·
