16 Author Success Principles

Authors want to know what the secret sauce to good book marketing is. Though there are tactics, resources, events, and people to call upon for that, nothing works best until you have your act together. You can improve your book marketing by examining ways to improve yourself.

Do you:

1.      See, say, and/or do things that others won’t, can’t and don’t?

2.      Have strong convictions and beliefs that guide your actions, a foundation of values that focuses you?

3.      Look at how to be different while making a difference?

4.      Set long-term, short-term, and daily goals?

5.      See the possibilities in others, circumstances, and yourself?

6.      Look to help others who can help you?

7.      Understand your value and unique selling proposition?

8.      Take action over contemplation?

9.      Recognize that little separates success from failure, but that the gap must be bridged nevertheless?

10.  Promote positive thinking, take right action, and treat others respectfully?

11.  Seek out new opportunities, see them where others don’t, and create ones that don’t yet exist?

12.  Accept things as they appear to be, or change the way things are?

13.  Listen to what people say and want -- or do you ignore their needs and concerns?

14.  Put others first?

15.  Understand how your perceptions dictate your actions?

16.  Rely on the help of others to enable your success – and recognize that you are the product of your experiences, connections, and thoughts?

I understand that we are all different from one another and that some of the rah-rah self-help, inspirational and motivational speeches out there are not for everyone. Nothing is one-size-fits-all, but still, you would be hard-pressed to disagree with any and all of the principles stated above, because there’s a truth to each of them that is undeniable. Yet, we live our lives ignoring, violating, or mis-executing these principles, just like we fail at times on our diet and exercise regimens, our fiscal responsibilities, and our self-control when it comes to addictive substances, habits, and people.

We are humans, not robots that can just be programmed. We are not just animals that follow our basest instincts without consequences.

We are not characters in a film or novel. We are real – fragile and fearful, weak, tired, angry, and anxious.

But, we have the power to do better. To measure and improve. To seek out help. To switch courses and to play up to our abilities. Keep it simple. Change something today that makes you better tomorrow. Repeat and rinse. Never stop striving for improvement no matter what station you have reached in life. The better you, the better writer and book marketer you are to become.
