Is The News Media Dying?
One third of all printed newspapers, like an endangered species,
disappeared from 2005 to 2025, according to a new book, Empire of Ink: The
Printers, Rogues, and Radicals Who Invented the American Newspaper. We went
from 9000 newspapers informing, shaping, helping, and entertaining the country
to 6000. Of the remaining papers, many are skeletons of what they used to be.
Some no longer publish daily or as often as they used to. Many editions are
smaller and more of the editorial content is outsourced from national entities
like a newswire or the Internet. Independent journalism is dying and the nation
is not better for it.
