Publishing Needs All Americans To Be Online!

A Pew Research Center study three years ago identified that seven percent of Americans do not use the Internet. That number dropped to five percent this January. Still, that means millions of people are living lives in the last century.

Even worse, one in five Americans lack Internet access at home. As of October 2022, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) reported that nearly one in five US households — or 24 million households — are not connected to the Internet at home.

So what does this mean for the book world?

There are tens of millions, due to literacy, education, age, culture, and economics who live disenfranchised lives. If only they had access to free or inexpensive books! We need everyone to be online — and on board — for this to happen.

One positive result of the pandemic was that more people went online in the past four years. When schools and businesses closed their doors — and friends and families self-isolated — an urgent push was made to get people online. Still, it is hard to imagine that tens of millions of Americans lack Internet access at home.

Whether prices for services can come down or the government helps impoverished people, we must eliminate any financial barriers to getting everyone online.

Society wins when we have an informed society, where everyone has equal access to the core tools and basic resources one needs to survive and thrive in a modern-day society. And if the book world wants to grow it will need to grow everyone’s access to the Internet.

Interview With Author Shefqet Meko

1. What inspired you to write this book? My inspiration for this book stems from my unique life. Spanning two centuries, two continents, and two vastly different societies, I've had the privilege of experiencing life in Albania under the socialist block. This stark contrast has ignited my imagination and provided a wealth of inspiration for my writing.

2. What is it about, and who is it written for? "Saga Across the Atlantic" is a story about resilience, hope, and the pursuit of a better life. It follows a childless couple's journey to America, struggles, and unwavering determination to succeed. It's a story that resonates with anyone who dreams and strives for a better future, making it a compelling read for a wide range of readers.

3. What do you hope readers will get from reading your book? I hope readers of my books will see American freedom and endless opportunities with a fresh perspective. They will gain a deeper understanding of what it means to live and dream in America, a land that offers everything to be free but demands nothing for free. I invite you to embark on a journey of discovery.

4. How did you decide on your book's title and cover design? This is a time struggle. You put several titles as options, and you cross them all out. It takes work. The book's title is Arkimend, saying, "Give me the point to hold the globe." I  have been lucky to hear my friend's suggestion in the final title, and on the book cover are the artists to figure out.  This process is like seeing several new girls, and you are not sure where to focus and love because all of them are so beautiful that you have a hard time choosing... Ahaaa.

5. What advice or wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!?   I remember that when I was young, one of the most famous Albanian writers, Ismail Kadare,  told us at the national conference of young talents in literature: "In the writing business, you enter to be famous and to be the greatest one." At that time, we all were astonished by such advice. He was encouraged to be brave and intelligent and aim at the top of success. We were under a dictatorship where the most famous gau was the Leader and no other. This advice sparked much discussion and criticism but was one of the best. My best friend in the writing business tells me: tell your story as you feel it. Readers will get it.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? Nowadays, whether we like them or not, books, even human treasures, and wisdom, are becoming the "commodities of the market." They are there in the open market, on librarians in the bookshops. On fair that readers can choose from. You dream of being a best seller, but to come to this point, you need not only talents, skills, and a unique way of writing and telling the story but a lot of investment in advertising. I feel good when readers reach out to me and say they liked my book. This is an unnoted award that feels any writer.

7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career helpful when writing this book?   Writing a book and having nothing from your life and experience is impossible. Of course, the life you experienced is reflected in your book, but it is mixed up with other stories that your friend may have told you or seen in the distance. Writing is a mixture of truth and fantasy all the time.

8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? It's important to be you. I write about my thinking, analyze the situation, prescribing  the characters, etc. Writing the book is not a prescription from your doctor, that should be exactly what he is  telling the pharmacist to give you. This process is very complex because it is you, others,  standings, ideas, and your other readings as well. So, there are so many factors in your mind that make you write in your own way. However I would say that my writing style is like Balzak or Hygo, sometimes like Jack London as writers that I did read in my  youth. It's my belief that each writer has his own style of writing as a "passport" to go to the audience of the readers.

9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? Often, when you start a book, you do not sleep well, or sometimes you do not sleep at all. You are living in a different world once the book is in your mind. It's like an architrave project. He should put all the details and measure everything to succeed. In writing, even you do not have such perfect measurements. You have a lot of ideas that, most of the time, confuse you, and you struggle to get clarity. It's a process that is coming through your mind. Not simple, not impossible.

10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? The author has only the name on the book. The rest is in the market and readers' choices; it's fantastic. Once you buy my book, it's yours to enjoy. Of course, the author dreams of having a chance to interact with readers to get their ideas, objections, and suggestions, making the book enjoyable. For instance, in my novel "The American Visa," the main character dies at the end. He lost his life accidentally after fighting for justice. Most of my readers asked me, "Why did you kill   Artan Pojani (The main character) at the end? I was astonished by such a reaction, but getting involved in this kind of debate was fun. My answer was simple. "I did not kill him. God decides my hero's fate. We all have our own fate that we like to say "Was written by  God" or, for those who are atheists, "Was a random chance." Life is like that. We never know our end, but we live and dream like we never will die. One day we will go, but the books that we wrote or read remain among the generations to come.

Fixing Your Broken Book Marketing

I came across a book, Inventions That Didn’t Change The World, about invention ideas that never took off. I got to thinking: Why didn’t they work then? Could they work now? Could some aspect of a failed idea be applied in a way that could make a portion of it successful today?

This is what authors should be asking about their book marketing campaigns: Could the marketing of your book be improved?

Did you try something that didn’t work at the time for you, such as social media? Perhaps if you tweaked what you did, do it with better effort, and do it more frequently and for longer, change platforms, alter the type of content posted, and solicit more people, you would end up seeing the benefit you had hoped to see.

The same thing with your outreach to the news media. Maybe you need a different pitch or story angle. Maybe you need to change or expand the list of media outlets and people that you are soliciting. Perhaps your means of outreach has to go beyond what you did. If you only emailed people, try calling, faxing, snail mailing, or tracking the media down one tweet at a time.

Whatever it is that you have been doing with your marketing, change something — do more of it, less of it, differently.

In book marketing, whatever you have been doing that is not yielding results has to change. Look at the obvious things: the tone and content of your message, the visuals, method of delivery, timing, duration of effort, level of energy used, attitude, shortcuts, using any technology or connections, being more creative, and doing the things most people are too dumb, lazy, afraid, insecure, or poor to do.

Sometimes, nothing you do delivers the kind of results that you felt warranted the effort. Not every book can be successfully marketed. Most are not. But you need to try, or else your book just dies.

Interview With Author Michael "Max" Basenese

1. What inspired you to write this book? To provide hope to those desperately looking for answers. People are struggling with addiction, loneliness, looking for a sense of purpose, belonging, and hope.

2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for? It is about finding your joy and purpose in your life. It won't be found in alcohol, drugs, money, or material things. These things are short-term leaving you in a vicious downward spiral leaving you even more sad and empty. This book is relevant to all.

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? Hope! No matter what they have done they can overcome to live in joy and peace.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? The title is TP3Joy - the transformational power of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. These real emotional life defining moments changed me forever. I was changed from the inside out. The first moment was a startling revelation of how living out of control was a path to self-destruction. The book cover represents the final emotional moment on how God literally saved me from a propane explosion. I was engulfed in a fireball but walked away.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!? Everyone has a story that needs to be told. You can help others learn from your life experiences. Live to inspire, live to serve others there is no stronger sense of joy.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?  People are searching for the truth, finding what is good in a world of deception, corruption and greed. Look at our culture today. We are being deceived, divided and denied the right to pursue liberty and happiness. Look at this generation celebrating life through social media, music and books. Everyone has something they want to share. People want to celebrate what is good, not constantly being deceived and divided.

7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book?  Most definitely. Growing up in a large Italian Family, family was everything. We are one family; everyone has a part to play. Each person has their own special talent that blossoms as part of the whole. Diversity does not truly succeed and flourish without inclusion.

8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? Transparent emotional honesty based in truth and reality. Life is a journey of highs, lows, sad and happy. Embrace all of it and learn from both the good and the bad. We only get one life, one chance, make the most of it. Everyone person has their own style, find yours by sharing your story. A couple of my favorite writers are Nelson DeMille, Mario Puzzo, and Bill O'Rielly. They are great story tellers. DeMille uses emotion, suspense and humor to capture the reader. Puzzo made Italian American a genre that captured America's appetite the struggle and survival of immigrants in America. We all came from somewhere with a story. O'Rielly for capturing and telling in reality and truth. We cannot change history, but we can learn from it.

9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? The raw emotion it took to write this book. I was a proud strong man chasing after my own desires, living for me. Did I really want to bring my truth to light? Well, we will all stand before God alone. He knows everything we have done, the motivation behind it and what is truly in our hearts. Whether we believe this or accept it or deny it; it will happen. The most valuable lesson I learned is this; it is not where you live, but how you live.

10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? My book is not about me. It is about the reader. I wrote this for everyone. Do not be ashamed of whom you are. Find your way, look for the truth, find your joy by sharing your story. You matter, you are not a mistake. We make mistakes, God does not. You were created in love with special gifts to serve God, others and yourselves. That is where you find JOY - Jesus, Others, Yourself.

About The Author: Michael Basenese is a successful business Entrepeneur living in Southwest Florida with his wife of forty-six years, Colleen. He spent twenty-five years as a C-Level Sales executive with Fortune 500 companies in the automotive industry. He and Colleen then launched two successful software companies. The first, Family Point was a front-runner to Facebook in 1996. Family Point reached the top 150 websites in 1999. Their second company, onProject.com, was a web-based project management portal that enabled geographically dispersed teams to work together apart using collaborative tolls. Adopted by large companies like Verizon, Ernst & Young and Pulte Homes. With success came emotional hardships that led Michael to accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior. His first book, The Power of the Three = Joy, describes three life-defining moments that turned his life around. Remember, all things are possible with God! For more info, see: www.TP3Joy.com

How Authors Ace Media Interviews

Many authors struggle to secure opportunities from the news media to be interviewed about their book, so when they finally get a yes from an outlet like a podcast or radio interview, they then have to figure out how they will come across strong and positive enough to sell lots of books.

Here are some secrets I have learned over the past three decades of having my authors do tens of thousands of interviews:

1. Think positive and things will go smoothly.

2. Set yourself up for success — do mock interviews, come up with suggested interview questions for the media outlet, and brush up on any current news events, trends, or anniversaries/holidays that you might mention in an interview.

3. Be in control of the conversation and set the pace with the timing and style of your answers. Speak with a consistent persona and stay in character.

4. Know what you are trying to achieve in the interview, and figure out what to say — and how you will say it — to achieve that goal. Do you want to lead them to your website or a social media page? Do you want them to buy a book or take some other action step? Tell them what to do.

5. Always smile, even if they can’t see you, and speak as if the person were in the room with you, even if they are not. Be rested and thirst-quenched so you can speak clearly and energetically.

6. Neither give short, curt answers nor lengthy, rambling ones. Allow for the reporter or host to converse with you and keep the interview flowing.

7. Do not repeat yourself, word-for-word, but do revisit, in a restated way, an important point.

8. Always add in your credentials in a casual way, not like you are reciting a resume. For instance, without naming everyone you worked for just say: “Well, in my 20 years of helping thousands of patients as a psychotherapist, I…”

9. State things that are understandable, actionable, and interesting. Feel free to challenge conventional wisdom or to be critical of something or someone.

10. Anticipate answers to all of your suggested interview questions, and where possible, share a quick story or fact to support your idea or claim.

11. Speak in memorable sound bites. How? Say things emphatically. Raise a good question. Use humor, if appropriate. Show how something seems wrong, dangerous, mean, dumb, or a bad deal. Praise something that is popular and that people would agree with. Choose the words that people feel, and that are not just functional. Paint a picture for them.

12. Fear nothing. Have fun and see this as a chance to say what you think, know, feel, and believe in. Every question is an opportunity for you to state one or more of your key talking points. You are not there to please the interviewer, but rather, to pierce the hearts and minds of potential readers.

Interview With Author Giuseppa Russo

1.       What inspired you to write this book? Love for nature and music.

2.       What exactly is it about and who is it written for? It tells the fairy tale 'Peter and the Wolf' translated by musical instruments. The focus is on the comparison between the sound images of nature and the artistic expression of composers who were inspired by nature and sounds, who used music as a means of imitation. This book would be for primary schools, cartoons, films and the general public.

3.       What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? Curiosity, interest and love for nature and music.

4.       How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? It aims to highlight the educational importance of music with a playful cover design to promote to the primary school audience.

5.       What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!? Use your inspiration to give you joy when writing your books.

6.       What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? Scenarios that disrupt the psychophysical training of children and the publishing industry is going in this direction.

7.       Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book? Teaching experience, study and contact with nature and love of music.

8.       How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? Concise style resembling that of the Latin poets.

9.       What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? I found difficulties finding the appropriate animations to match the musical harmonies within the book.

10.   If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? It is difficult for young readers to understand an instrumental musical text or how a composer can translate a sonorous image of nature that inspired him through music. I recommend buying my book because it is simple, innovative and is structured in a dialogue between the grandfather and his young nephew.

About The Author: Giuseppa Russo was born in 1940. She is married and the mother of three children. She has a degree in literature. She loves nature and the spirit of rhythm and music in all creation. She has taught music education to children from 6 to 13 years. She has written the book Musica prima forma di vita that was published in 1991. She is writing an innovative piece of work consisting of seven books, titled Education to Sounds and Rhythm for Primary Education.

Interview With Author Raymond J Simpson (Ray Simpson)

1. What inspired you to write this book?  1. The world faces apocalypse. 2. The essence of Christ’s Way needs to be rescued from Christianity’s imprisonment in colonial paradigms. 3. This relates Christ’s Way to ‘post-modern’ people of all major religions and nationalities.

2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for?  A Way of Life: Three Life-giving Principles and Ten Waymarks. Any searching, serious person who reaches beyond mere materialism.

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book?  A life-line, a rhythm, a purpose, a fellowship.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? The Way of Life already is published in 9 world languages. I read that a reason why Benedictinism survived through the 2nd millennium was that its founder wrote a detailed commentary on its way of life.  Cover:  a world (the globe) a Celtic Cross (Celtic saints are a source of inspiration) and light dawning is also a metaphor.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!?  Stick to the deepest inspiration or stop writing.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?  Fragmenting. Ephemeral. But there’s a slot for hope, soul surgery. and civilization.

7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book?  Conversion to Christ.  The song ‘The world walked into my heart’.  Recovering the lost art of listening for nations.

8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? Succinct.  Personal linked to global. Spiritual linked to real politic.

About the Author: My autobiography is entitled Monk in the Marketplace. Following London University, ordination into the Christian Ministry, curacies in industrial English Midlands and multi-racial Tooting I was appointed the founding pioneer minister of one church (sponsored by six Catholic and Protestant church streams) for a unique new neighborhood. Then a call to be Founding Guardian of an international New Monastic Dispersed Community of Aidan and Hilda.  I have had over 60 books published in three continents.
