Top Cities For Book Sales Growth

Book sales have been soaring so high over the last few years that the 14.4% gain from 2019 for Los Angeles is actually below the growth average of other markets. Indeed, many big cities saw double-digit growth, including Chicago, Dallas, and Atlanta, but the fastest growing cities for book sales may surprise you.

Here are the top 14 growth markets – each seeing a gain of 21.8% or more. Portland, Maine (37.3%) and Fresno, California )31.5%) showed the most growth.

1.      Portland, Maine                       37.3%

2.      Fresno, CA                             31.5%

3.      Phoenix                                   26.1%

4.      Green Bay                               26.0%

5.      Tampa                                     25.4%

6.      Orlando/Daytona                    24.9%

7.      San Antonio                            24.7%

8.      Cincinnati                                24.6%

9.      Salt Lake City                         23.95

10.  Des Moines, Iowa                   23.8%

11.  Flint, MI                                  23.5%

12.  Columbus                                22.8%

13.  Kalamazoo/Grand Rapids       21.9%

14.  Providence                              21.8%

So why did these cities see wild, above-average growth?

Likely, these cities saw population growth, demographic shifts, and perhaps the opening of more bookstores. But I don’t know that for a fact. Buying habits also could be changing. But the main thing is that book sales are up, especially in places we don’t think of as literary capitals.

However, the nation’s largest book market, New York City, saw sales growth of just 15% vs. the national average pf 15%. More people may have ordered books online but those sales weren’t being looked at here – only in-store sales.

Liberal cities like L.A., Boston, and NYC saw retail shutdowns during covid that lasted longer than in other parts of the country. This, too, could have been a factor.

Cheap Promotions For Authors

If you look at all of the many things that you can do to promote a book, from pursuing traditional news media and posting on social media to speaking and advertising, the secret formula will vary from author to author. Time, money, mindshare, skills, and knowledge will all play a key role in what you do, how much you do, and how well you make out. But one thing that all authors can participate in is cheap promotions.

A cheap promotion is under a hundred bucks. It could be paying for a review, such as Blue Ink Review. It could be doing a give away on Library Thing. It could be going to speak at a bookstore or pricing your book at FREE for a week. It can also be paying a few bucks to participate with book promotion sites, such as these:

www.bookdoggy.com/for-autors

www.bookbarbarian.com/ad-pricing

www.thefussylibrarian.com/newswire/for-authors

www.bargainbooksy.com/sell-more-books

www.bookraid.com/p/partners/signup

www.litnuts.com/pages/authors-and-publishers

What else is FREE or inexpensive to do?

·         Hand out fliers in a setting where your targeted readers gather

·         Post on your blog

·         Offer friends a referral fee on book sales

·         Try pay-per-click ads on Amazon with a limit of $50

·         Offer free e-books to people who promise to post a review

·         See if neighborhood stories (not bookstores) will sell your book on consignment with a 50-50 split of the proceeds

·         Set up a page on Amazon Author Central

·         Work with one or more authors to cross-promote each other

·         Become your own Amazon affiliate

To uncover the hundreds of things you can do to promote and market your book, I suggest you comb through back issues of www.BookMarketingBuzzblog.blogspot.com.
