Why Authors Must Promote During The Best Time to Write Books

A friend of mine, author, literary agent, and publishing pro Michael Larsen, penned a story a few years ago entitled “Why Now Is The Best Time To Be A Writer.” He has inspired me to realize that yes, this is the greatest time to be a writer in America’s rich literary history. But it is not without challenges, complaints, and pitfalls, especially during a messy pandemic.

Ingram, the world’s largest printer and distributor, for published and self-published authors, features 18 million titles. That’s a lot of books. This year, well over 1.5 million more titles will enter the marketplace, pushing that catalog ever bigger. Authors may complain they have more competition than ever before, but they also have more opportunities to get published than in any time in our rich publishing history.

Authors may lament they have to market and promote their books. Given that the majority of new books do not come from traditional publishers, authors must toot their own horn or they disappear from the conversation. Even authors published by publishers, including the soon-to-be Big 4, need to actively promote not just their newest book but their author brand.

Authors have no off-season from marketing themselves. Whether they are months or years in between books, they have a demand placed on them by the realities of today’s world. They must always build their brand, and spend some time planning or executing a marketing campaign.

Authors have more ways than ever before to market themselves. They can:

·         Speak at a conference, bookstore signing, or event

·         Conduct a seminar

·         Be active on a variety of social media platforms

·         Be a blogger and guest-post on the blogs of others

·         Advertise in a variety of ways and different mediums

·         Apply for book awards and contests

·         Secure grants or raise money via a GoFundMe campaign

·         Generate traditional media coverage exposure, such as TV interviews, newspaper book reviews, magazine feature stories, newsletter articles, etc.

·         Be a podcaster and be interviewed by podcasters

·         Have a You Tube channel

·         Use their website to sell books

·         Network online or in person

Michael Larsen’s advice is sound, just as it appeared in an article adapted from a talk he gave to the Women’s National Book Association, SF Chapter. He said:

·         “Your future depends on your ability to communicate through your work and to your communities. Success will take longer than you’d like, because the impact of your efforts will be cumulative. But if you persevere, success is inevitable.”

·         “Be a contentpreneur by reselling your content and services in as many forms, media, and countries as you can. How-to books offer more opportunities for this than fiction.”

·         “Make everything you do sell everything else you do. Keep publishing books that sell each other, and you will keep generating more synergy and opportunities.”

Is now the greatest time to write a book? Absolutely! Keep on writing – and marketing – and you can make this the greatest time not just for writers, but the world.

An Interview With Author Tammy Spears

The book was written in memory of my beautiful "MOTHER" Diana Hullings who passed away at a young age of 61 from lung cancer. ("MOTHER" is a poem in my book). Her mother was and still is her inspiration in life and she wanted to dedicate her book of poetry in her memory to share with family and friends to be inspired as well. Her book of poetry contains inspirational poems of love for a Mother and a Mother’s love, blessings in life, love of family, love to share, God’s gifts and blessings, honoring the military, life experiences, seasons of change, memories of a loved one, reminiscing and cherishing precious time, and love of a child and spouse. For more information, please see: https://www.amazon.com/Flutter-Eye-Tammy-Spears/dp/1532038631/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1548969179&sr=8-1&keywords=flutter+of+an+eye

1. What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and turning it into a book? The passing of my Mother was the inspiration to write my book.  I was writing poems twice a year once on her birthday 9-17 and once on the date of her passing on 10-17-07 and submitted it to the local newspaper in her memory.  On the 10th Anniversary of her passing on 10-17-2017 the good Lord above whispered you can do this and my writing started flowing from there.

2. What is it about and who is it for? The passing of my Mother was the inspiration to write my book. My book of poetry contains inspirational poems of love for a Mother and a Mother’s love, blessings in life, love of family, love to share, God’s gifts and blessings, honoring the military, life experiences, seasons of change, memories of a loved one, reminiscing and cherishing precious time, and love of a child and spouse.

3. What do you hope the reader will be left with after reading it? I hope the poetry will inspire you and touch your heart and soul as it did when I was writing it.

We only have "One Life" to live, make an "IMPACT" while you can, "Reach for Hope" when in need, "Come Together" and "Lend a Hand" to make a difference, "Cherish the Memories", "Precious Time" and all of "Life's Blessings" God sends your way "Year After Year".  Won't you "Take me With You" on The "Walk" of  life's journey?  (All of the quotes are inspirational poems in my published poetry book).

4. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers? The one message I would like to convey to my readers and writers is to Cherish Life and the many Blessings God sends your way! "Dream"-"Dream"-"Dream" you can make your dreams a Reality! This was taken from one of my poems in the book called "Dream"My advice to aspiring Authors would be to pursue your writing as an Author if it is a passion and make your "Dream" come to light!

5. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? I think the book world is heading towards new technology and audio and film.

6. What challenges did you overcome to write this book? The challenge is like everything in life you have to work hard for what you believe in and to continue to pursue your "Dream" if it is your passion.

7. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? My book will touch the heart and soul of all who want to be inspired in life! Cherish the gift of life God has given you, the love of family and friends he has bestowed upon you and his many gifts and blessings.

You Can Bet Books Have A Good Shot

I never thought that going to a racetrack could save my life, but it may have.

Now, before you think I am a gambling addict, there was no bet placed, no horse race run. I went to Aqueduct Racetrack to get my first dose of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccination.

I was a bit nervous getting it, not so much thinking it would hurt, but that I would suffer some serious, life-threatening side effect. I once had such a reaction to a drug that I was in the hospital for 11 days.

Thankfully, no reaction to round one of two. I come back in three weeks for another dose. I will let you know if I survive. The good news is I greatly increased my chances of surviving corona, should I get it. I feel like good times are around the corner, not just for me, but the nation.

Maybe Memorial Day Weekend will again kick off a summer of beach visits, travel, and barbecues with friends and family. I hope to get to some Mets games and lots of restaurants.

It is as if we have all been in a corona-induced coma, left in isolation, unable to really touch each other. But that will change soon. We will enter a hybrid spring where long-dormant theaters, schools, restaurants, and arenas open up, gradually getting back to 50% capacity or more. There will still be some social distancing and masks may remain, especially in places like public transportation. But we will move forward.

The book world will move with it. We can soon return to lingering in the store, sitting at a cafe or reading a book on a chair. We will no longer come in to just make a transaction or pickup and then scamper out. No, we shall purposely reconnect with the temple of knowledge, breathing in the air of your town’s true center. We will be able to talk to one another and again experience the community of books. Author events and book signings  — and writer conferences, book festivals, and author seminars will return in 2021.

I implore others to get the vaccine. It is what we can all do to protect ourselves and each other. It is what will bring us back together, to a normalcy many of us have forgotten but crave.

And it will bring us back sooner to the world of books and people.

Interview With Author Eric Power

Q: What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and turning it into a book?

A: I was asked by my mentor to co-write a book with him. I had been thinking about writing a book for a while. When my mentor Greg asked, I accepted. I soon took over the book and pretty much turned it into a story for veterans. It was the universe who chose me to send this message, I am just the delivery man.

Q: What is it about and who is it for?

A: It is a story about a veteran fresh out of the military and his experiences with mentorship along the wayThe book is for veterans and their loved ones.

Q: What do you hope the reader will be left with after reading it?

A: I hope this will give veterans a sense of understanding about themselves knowing they are not alone. For civilians, a better understanding of the men and women who have served.

Q: What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers -

A: Don’t quit ...

Q: What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?

A: Unfortunately, I do not follow publishing trends at this time.

Q: What challenges did you overcome to write this book?

A: It was a project that lasted a good 10 months. The challenge was finding the time to write. Being a full-time father, husband and entrepreneur along with a pandemic, I had to write early morning, or late evenings while everyone was asleep.

Q: If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?

A: This book will save the lives of veterans and help civilians understand the veteran family members a little better.

Eric Louis Power is an author, speaker, entrepreneur, and social activist dedicated to helping military veterans and their families achieve a better quality of life. Power served honorably in the US Navy reaching the rank of Petty Officer First Class and serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Southern Watch. Power has a total of seven deployments, with 3.5 years in Active Combat zones. He is the founder of For Veterans By Veterans, a nonprofit that provides assistance to homeless vets, and he is the founder and CEO of Veterans Disability Help, LLC, a firm that manages VA disability claims and helps disabled veterans get the benefits they deserve. Since 2012, Power has been responsible for redirecting over 2.1 Million dollars a month recurring from the VA, back to the veterans in regard to their VA disability claims.    For more info, see www.dontshootyourfutureself.com

When Does Book Publicity Lead To Sales?

Book publicity can lead to book sales. How many sales is the question.

There is a lot that is uncertain when it comes to marketing and promoting a book. You can spend a lot of money and see few sales, especially if you did not spend it wisely – or you can generate sales on a shoestring budget if you work hard and smart – and get lucky.

So what can an author do to generate book sales – and can book publicity lead to something of value, not just book sales?

One approach to publicity is that an author try something and see if it works. Spend a little, but it is not always possible to do this. Sometimes timing is a factor. For instance, you can’t do a PR campaign where you send, say, 20 copies to book reviewers and then wait to see what happens. You may not know what happens for many months. The time to get book reviews, with certain publications, is three to four months prior to a book’s publication date. So, if you plan to seek book reviews, there is no trial period approach to be taken. You go all in.

But if you want to try some google ads and see how they perform, you can easily and quickly do more at any time. Authors should definitely diversify their portfolio, allocating some percentage of their time and money into:

·         Social media

·         Speaking

·         Traditional media

·         Advertising

·         Giveaways

Publicity should yield sales of books but it depends on many factors. For instance, did you get enough media exposure with the right media outlets? Did you do a good job selling it in your interviews? Is your book priced right, look attractive, and readily available? Is it a timely book? Do you have a lot of competitors?

Some publicity will benefit authors even if they do not sell a lot of books immediately. For instance, publicity can help an author land some speaking engagements that pay a fee or allow for books to be sold. It gives the author third-party validation and looks good when featured on the author’s website. It might draw more connections on social media platforms. It might get people to visit your site where one can possibly buy other books, products or services that you might offer. Publicity also helps get your message out to many people, touching the lives of others.

Authors should have a marketing plan, diversify it, experiment, and go into this knowing there are pay-offs that consist of things beyond – or including – book sales.

Sometimes authors fail to get anything they wanted but a big bill, but like all of life, you need to invest a little to have a chance at gaining a lot more.

Interview with Success Author Kim Lorenz

What inspired you to write this book? Through my years as a business owner, partner, and CEO, I have developed a key understanding of what it takes to succeed in business. My mission is to teach vital tools essential for business success beyond what is taught in business schools.

Who should read it and why? This book is for anyone who wants to have a successful and happy life. It’s a business memoir so, of course, it’s relevant to nascent entrepreneurs and veteran business owners, but I was blown away with the number of mainstream readers this book has attracted. Tireless: Key Principles that Drive Success Beyond Business School is a testimony to those who strive to seek opportunity. It is a must-read for everyone that is determined to win.

How’s it better or different than others in its genre? Tireless: Key Principles that Drive Success Beyond Business School inspires readers to view life differently and seek alternative solutions that others miss. Not only will it open up your eyes to the business opportunities that surround you, but it will also show you exactly what to do once you get there. This business memoir is upbeat, fast-paced, and entertaining. Although it is easy to read, it is information-rich and filled with provocations for reflection and action. I offer incisive usable advice about establishing and leading any type of company.  Tireless: Key Principles that Drive Success Beyond Business School  is a user-friendly blueprint that explains exactly how to find hidden opportunities and convert them into profitable, novel business streams.

What challenges did you overcome to write your book? Collecting my thoughts on paper and culling my experience down into a format that the masses can understand, apply, and enjoy. There was over 35 years of training files and notes I called my 'Book File'.  If I wrote something on all of it, the book would have 171 chapters.  So, condensing, choosing what to write, and doing it in a way readers would enjoy, was challenging, but enjoyable.  It was also a lot of work.  But like stated in the book so often, you have to commit, make it happen, follow through, take all the steps required.

What lasting messages do you hope readers are left with after consuming your book? It’s easy to lose motivation in today’s world.  My stories and personal anecdotes are proof that positive thinking and follow through lead to success. Through experience, I have learned that anyone can develop a successful business by noticing unsolved problems and business success relies heavily on "seeing the unseen." I want readers to get inspired, see hidden opportunities, and learn from true business stories that aren't taught in business school. Above all, the goal of Tireless: Key Principles that Drive Success Beyond Business School, is to leave readers with the passion and optimism needed to succeed both in business and in life.

What advice would you give to a struggling writer? Writers (just like entrepreneurs) should seek and seize the opportunities in front of you because your next decision could dictate the trajectory of life. If you do not take action on building your knowledge base, then nothing happens. Read. Write. Make connections. Have conversations with others in the industry.

Where do you see the book industry heading? The rise of technology, social media, and the internet has given a platform to writers who would not otherwise be able to share their expertise.
