Interview With Artist & Author Aimee Erickson

1. What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and turning it into this book?

I was delighted when the publisher approached me in search of an author. I'd considered writing a book but this was the perfect opportunity.

2. What is it about and who is it for?

Plein air painting is the practice of painting outdoors on location, just like Monet and Renoir did, allowing the artist to observe light and nature in the moment and translate directly to the canvas. This book is for those who love beauty and want to better understand how we see and how we can capture a convincing version of reality in two dimensions, and also for anyone who wants a book with gorgeous reproductions of beautiful paintings.

3. What takeaways might the reader will be left with after reading it?

I expect the reader will be inspired and start feeling the itch to get out the art supplies and lay down some color. I also suspect the reader will be very clear on the fact that reflections always go straight down.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design?

Easy: I approved the designer's decisions.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers?

Something I never learned in school--that writing is one thing and editing is completely separate. This applies to painting as well--there's a mindset where you just go--just paint, or just write, don't think about it, only do. Afterwards, in a different frame of mind, you can assess, consider, rearrange.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?

I don't have much perspective here.

7. What challenges did you overcome to write this book?

I had a great time writing it! My challenge was the distractions of typing on a computer--you know, notifications, updates, alerts, icons, all that animated nonsense, which I overcame by using a 1950's era Royal typewriter and typing it out on three-by-five cards. No saving needed, and no backspacing or copying and pasting, either, which helps me organize my thoughts. Of course I retyped everything into the computer later.

8. How would you describe your writing style?

I tend towards the poetic. Ages ago I had a job as a technical writer at a missile subsystems manufacturer, which was a very different kind of writing--very specific and structured. When I write about dreams or painting or life in general, my words build momentum and drift towards a moment--definitely not the school system's favorite essay structure.

9. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?

It has beautiful pictures, and reading it will introduce you to a change in perception--a literal change in how you see the world.

Why Hire A Book Publicist?

What do nutritionists, therapists, school guidance counselor, career coaches, business consultants, stock brokers, and book marketing experts have in common?

The success of those they advise depends not just on the quality of advice, information, and inspiration received, but on the recipient’s ability to follow through and appropriately execute. In other words, it is up to the patient, student, or client to succeed.

Why should authors hire a book marketing expert? Wrong question.

Instead, only ask: Who should be hired — and by when?

Authors need help. A lot of it. Most authors don’t:

* Market enough or at all

* Enjoy marketing nor do it well

* Have a marketing plan

* Understand what they must do

* Know how to market their books

A good book marketer will:

* Be experienced, skilled, and knowledgeable about book publicity

* Tell you what needs to be done

* Show you how to do them

* Be able to do some of the necessary things for you

* Be encouraging and motivating

However, too often, authors:

* Fail to hire any help

* Hire the wrong people

* Get help in less important areas
* Don’t collaborate and support the efforts of their marketing pro

So, what is the solution? Your options include:

* Go it alone, if you must, but be prepared for long hours and many setbacks as you experiment.

* Do nothing and hope you get lucky and that people randomly discover your book.

* Rent a savvy book marketer’s mind. Get advice and mentoring on what to do — and avoid time-eating or money-gobbling trial-and-error guess campaigns.

* Hire a PR expert to do the things you can’t do, have no time to do, don’t enjoy doing — and supplement with things that you can do once he or she shows you what needs to be done and how to do it.

It is up to you to acknowledge where you are at on the book marketing spectrum and to come to the realization that you need some help. It is never too late to reach out and take ownership of your book’s marketing fate.

Does Romance Only Exist In Books?

Is straight romance dead in America?

Not if you look at book sales. Hollywood? Dead.

Total unit sales for romance novels reached 47 million in 2021, including print and digital formats. This is a 24% increase compared to 2020, which recorded 37.9 million sold units.

Sales were up again in 2022, making the genre a fast-growing one.

During 2021, romance sales accounted for 18% of total adult fiction sales, making romance the second highest-selling fiction category.

It is amazing to see romance books still sell so well.

Or maybe it should not surprise me. Erotica fuels some of this growth.  So do books serving the LGBTQ community. However, romance books are not being converted into movies or streamed shows in proportion to their sales. Instead, lots of violent crime dramas, dystopian stories, and sci-fi seem to fill our screens, big and small. Why?

Aren’t we ready for another 50 Shades of Gray movie or a spin-off TV show? Or what about good old romance of boy meets girl or of someone in a good marriage? Oddly, it is hard to find that on TV or in movies. Does Hollywood hate mainstream relationships? Does it believe people are incapable of love or that people will pay to see it depicted on screen?

I was watching the airing of Ghost, a great love story told in a unique way, from 1990. That kind of movie does not exist today on any screen. Why?

Hollywood just seems to be filled with writers and workers in loveless relationships, gay lifestyles, and broken marriages— and it shows in their product. Can’t anyone green-light a good heterosexual love story? Where are the positive role models for the vast majority of the world? It is a huge market!

Maybe some studio will take this on and take ownership of a lucrative sector and start converting romance books into film and television. If the book world sets the pace, we should be seeing love and romance splattered everywhere soon.

Interview With YA Fantasy Novelist Annette "Annie" Rodriguez

1. What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and turning it into this book?

I have always wanted to publish a book, ever since elementary school (and I am grateful self-publishing did not exist back then as I wanted no feedback other than “this is perfect work!”.  I was at a crossroads in my life in 2009, which is when I started writing the book.  It worked because my self-confidence was at my lowest.  It was my saving grace and the only certainty I had at that time-I’m going to write this.

2. What is it about and who is it for?

It’s about learning to deal with loss and self-discovery, amid a world filled with supernatural creatures.  It’s dedicated to the man and the woman who rescued my self-confidence, but it’s for people like me-who, at times of crises (and life is full of those) need both someone to lean on, and the self-assurance to know that life has a work of working out.

3. What takeaways might the reader be left with after reading it?

There are several ways to love someone.

There is no one like you-embrace it

You are stronger than you think

Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want to be loved, it doesn’t mean they do not love you with all they have.

Not everything is about you-when you learn that, life will become a more beautiful place.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design?

I love to let my title influence the book, so that is my first thought.  I love reflective titles-it will make you think-it will make you (hopefully) pick up the book to see what it’s about. Lifeforce is the root of the mortality vs immortality debacle-or at least we think it is.

For the design-I had an idea of the color and concept-I asked friends and family to look at some pictures and the rest of the credit goes to Asha Hossain Design, LLC., -my designer, who did a wonderful job!  I’m not a visual person, so this is not me being modest!

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers?

Finish your book before you think of publishing and be careful not to compromise your vision to follow a standard.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?

I often see the innocent girl and the sex-god-like- guy who wants her and ends up loving her, the girl who is all the promise the family has and does everything for them to her peril, the very talented but lazy main character who goes through self-discovery to get out of a problem, the MC who has a lot of problems, mostly dealing with family legacy, and the person he loves fixes or gives him the strength to fix it all, the reluctant hero….I could go on.

Although legal thrillers and world building books are popping up more often,  I think the book publishing industry is still invested on finding that unique spin to a done plot, but books with social justice issues are also becoming more prevalent. This generation is not shying away from difficult conversations.

7. What challenges did you overcome to write this book?

Self-confidence woes when you just think you’re not good enough, coping with demands of a full time job and full time study, when the family accuses you of being constantly isolated,  and when finished, having your vision questioned.

8. How would you describe your writing style?

I would say dialogue focused-I like exposition through dialogue rather than description and I love implying things.  Simply, this is a thinking journey, a journey of self-discovery with relatable characters.

9. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?

Because they might end up discovering something about themselves that they ere hiding from. It’s a self-discovery journey for not just the MC, but for readers too.

About The Author: Annette "Annie" Rodriguez was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico and started to write consistently when she was in tenth grade. As her writing and creative imagination progressed over the years, Annie became confident enough to share her work and create her own characters to go with these magical plots, and alas, the first draft of Lifeforce was born.

Fast forward what felt like endless revisions and consultations, Annie's beloved writing project was picked up for publication by Green Writers Press and her first novel was published in February 2019! Lifeforce’s sequel, Immortality’s Peril, is already in the works!

Annie's writing is accompanied by her impressive background as a practicing attorney, holding 2 Bachelor degrees and 2 Masters! Lifeforce was actually published during her first year of law school! A minority woman who has worked with students, Annie's passion for writing keeps her sane in the sometimes-harsh reality of training to practice law and her many other endeavors.
