There are plenty of
things out of your control in life, and there is no exception when it comes to
authors marketing their books. But there are many assets that you can possess —
and none of them require training, special abilities, or permission from
another. You can simply call upon what you already have available to you.
You can do the following right now — no costs,
schooling, or special tools required — to improve how you market yourself:
1. Be on time, even early — and stay late if
needed.
2. Work hard, long, and smart.
3. Act with enthusiasm and energy.
4. Display a positive attitude.
5. Be polite, friendly, and helpful.
6. Speak with passion.
7. Display good body language.
8. Dress neatly, match, and be appropriate for the
environment.
9. Be in a learning mode: ask questions.
10. Engage others by listening and showing your
curiosity about, and concern, for them.
11. Believe in your book and act with conviction.
12. Be opportunistic and ready to react or
initiate.
Sure, there are strategies, resources, skills,
connections, and ideas that one needs to market themselves and sell books, but
start by looking at yourself and the foundation of abilities that you can tap
into.
“ ‘If you are mesmerized by a charismatic
leader,’ he’ll say, ‘The key to walking on water is knowing where the stones
are.’ ”
--The Adventures of Herbie Cohen,

“ ‘Those who can live with ambiguity and
still function do the best,’ he told me. ‘Those who can’t stand uncertainty get
their certainty, but pay for it.’ “
