Each if these formats has pros and cons attached to them, but depending on a number of factors, you can narrow down your choices — or have your options narrow your choices for you.
What are the factors?
Preference: Which version suits you best? Are you guided by ego, opportunity, or some other circumstance?
Need: If you need a book out fast, self-publish it. If you need perceived prestige or marketing muscle of a big publisher, go that route.
Rejection: If you tried to get a literary agent and failed, or your sought a publisher and could not land one, your choices got a lot smaller.
Money: If you can afford an option like a hybrid publisher, you can consider that route. If you lack the budget, your choice is made.
Whichever version you land with, expect to take ownership of your author marketing and branding, regardless of what any publisher says it might do for you. Choose with your eyes open and then commit to giving your book its best chance to succeed.
