They said that print was dead. They said bookstores are shuttered. Well, the experts and parasites got it all wrong!
Print book sales account for almost 80 percent of book publishing revenue — and
bookstores are alive and well.
The number of indie bookstores has shot up in less than the past decade, with
the total number of indie bookstores doubling since 2016.
Barnes and Noble has rebounded from a losing streak that started with a
trifecta of e-book growth, the Great Recession, and the amazon craze some 15
years ago. A few days ago, B & N announced they would open 60 new
stores this year. They did 57 last year and 37 in 2023.
The number of newly published books is at record levels — over 550,000 annually
from the traditional publishers — and another 2.5 million from the
self-publishing and hybrid press world.
People re-discovered reading during the covid
shutdowns and despite all of the social media postings, web surfing, and
streaming downloads, people have time, money, and a desire to consume books. So
the next time some idiot asks: Who reads books?, you should say:
“Lots of people.”
It is book boom time!
