Frida Kahlo was an amazing, short-lived artist, who influenced not only with her paintings but with her fighting spirit. She overcame a severe disability to live a controversial lifestyle that brought her love and heartache. The post-revolutionary, bisexual Mexican artist defied chronic pain and contemporary convention to live life on her terms. Her amazing life and work, unfortunately, were not reflected in a newly opened, over-priced immersion experience, “Frida Kahlo, The Immersive Biography,” in Brooklyn.
A great concept wedded with great technology unfortunately resulted in something that falls far short of expectations. What this installation did for Frida is akin to what 3D movies of the 1950s did for Hollywood films — a lot of hype, but a lack of substance to show for it.
Never mind that the exhibit feels light and small, or that the indoor event space is freezing. Three things were sorely lacking. First, the eight-dollar virtual reality add-on, was not good at all. Second, the 30-minute immersion film that was shown on a 360-degree screen, was slow, lacked the telling of a story, and just randomly threw things in without thought for cohesion. Lastly, the entire experience felt stunted. There were zero displays of her art — until you got to the gift shop.
How do you tell her story without her art? Duh!
“Frida Kahlo, The Immersive Biography” is a co-creation between the Frida Kahlo Corporation and Layers of Reality, a renowned digital arts center in Spain. This immersive biographical exhibition takes visitors on a 90-minute interactive journey to explore the artist’s life through seven transformational spaces complete with 360 projections, award-winning virtual reality, and historical photographs. It sounds good, but it really is not worth the $39 admission fee.
Frida overcame hardship, created beauty from pain, broke boundaries, and continues to inspire today. But this exhibition does an injustice to all of that.
