Authors need to communicate well in their interactions. They market books via email, phone calls, public appearances, sending press releases, blogging, social media, and… Well, you get the idea- what can an author do to position themselves to succeed? Read this book by Leil Lowndes, How To Talk To Anyone: 92 Little Tricks for Big Success in Relationships.
Here are some of the dozens of suggestions
shared in the book:
- Come across as a positive person.
- Always have something interesting to say.
- Make where you are from sound exciting.
- Talk to a stranger like you would an old friend.
- Appeal to their “inner infant.”
- Use voice inflection to show interest and make intense
eye contact.
- Win their affection by overlooking their bloopers.
- Make others feel like a movie star and praise them often.
- Sound knowledgeable about their passions.
- Always come across as confident, credible, and
charismatic.
- Sound like an insider in any crowd, no matter how little you have in common.
I realize a book like this may irk the author who already knows they are a bit shy or reluctant to engage others beyond their comfort zone. It may not be a skill deficiency that needs to be addressed; it’s really a psychological issue. Some people are simply not good or comfortable with others.
Still, we can’t just throw up our hands and lean on the excuse: “That’s just who I am.” We don’t have to accept that any more than we accept an alcoholic has to remain boozed up. It’s hard to change. It’s frustrating. It’s painful.
It’s necessary.
We won’t all become smooth-talking party animals, but many authors can try to up their game. Honestly, reflect on where you fall short. Then, explore which changes you could make - and accept the fact that some things will never change. So, meet me halfway.
Perhaps the key here is to realize that you can control a lot of factors. For instance, you decide where you will circulate. Which situations will you put yourself in -- and which will you avoid?
Today, a lot of communication is not in person, not even always live. You can make a cool video for your website. You can design a cool flyer. You can come up with a catchy voice mail outgoing message. You can have a funky business card. You can fill out your social media profiles to sound amazing.
Do what you can to improve any aspect pf your
communication content and style. It will make a huge difference in your
results.
