Crime and Punishment is one of my all-time favorite books. If you are literate, I encourage you to consume it. We are approaching a date in history, some 173 years ago, where the book’s great author, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, was sentenced to be executed in Russia.
On November 16, 1849, he was told he would be killed a month later. His crime? Consorting with a literary group that read and discussed books and content that explored philosophy and ideas that had been banned by the government.
Tsar Nicholas I spared his life at the very last moment, when he ordered the guards to lower their guns as he stood outside waiting to be executed.
Over a decade later, he penned and published Crime and Punishment, initially in literary journal installments while in exile.

“Crime and Punishment follows the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished ex-student in Saint Petersburg who plans to kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker, an old woman who stores money and valuable objects in her flat. He theorizes that with the money he could liberate himself from poverty and go on to perform great deeds, and seeks to convince himself that certain crimes are justifiable if they are committed in order to remove obstacles to the higher goals of 'extraordinary' men. Once the deed is done, however, he finds himself racked with confusion, paranoia, and disgust. His theoretical justifications lose all their power as he struggles with guilt and horror and confronts both the internal and external consequences of his deed.”
This book is one of the
greatest books written in the last two centuries— and it still holds its own.
