No one has asked me what advice I would give to a writer so, of course I feel compelled to share some. Here you go:
Don’t write another word until you run it through a self-selected filter or
prism. Set a standard for your writings so that they don’t resemble those of
another, but are not different just for their own sake.
Strive to be the writer you wanted to be — or thought you were — at at age 10,
20, or 30.
Remember and realize how powerful your writings can be. They have the power to
change hearts and minds, resulting in life and death decisions.
How you say something is just as important as what you say. Know the power of
your words. Writings inspire revolutions of nations and of the hearts of
individuals.
Great writing can inform, inspire, enlighten, and entertain. Where you turn the
gaze of your pen can determine the fate of others.
You have the ability to lead and move others, but if that power feels
burdensome, at least remain honest and reveal to us who we are. Be our
mirror, but don’t just reflect what is on the outside. Go deeper.
Make people think and feel. Facts are not enough, though necessary parts to a
moving truth. Give us some color and depth. Give us answers to what gnaws at
us, what makes us throw our hands up in disgust, and what gives us pure joy.
The written word can be used to promote love or hate, war or peace. They
shape our present, provide a perspective of the past, give us a vision for the
future, or place us into worlds that do not exist or can’t be accessed.
Have a great year. Do more, write better, and measure your words in accordance
with what people desire or need to hear. Write what you want in the way you are
good at— then share it with others, and find a way to get paid for it.
