How Do You Go From A Writer’s Mindset to Marketer’s Mindset?

Being a writer comes naturally to many who take up the art of crafting words into meaningful stories, but becoming a marketer is a major transition for many authors. But it has to be done, it can be done, and it shall be done. You just need to be operating in a new frame of mind.

As a writer, you will shift from
creating to selling, and go from being isolated to working a crowd, taking your thoughts and actions from
private to public. Yes, you may be a gifted writer and that got you to where you are today. The next leap is to enter the world of book marketing.

Now your time will need to be split between writing and marketing — while still tending to your work, family, and chores. Make room to be active on social media, talk up your book wherever you are to anyone, get interviewed by the news media, send your book out for reviews, seek out speaking engagements, apply for book awards, and contact non-profits/churches/schools/businesses to solicit book sales. You can do this. You’ve got this.

What you have time, energy, and skill to do, do, it.  Where you can pay another to do what you can’t or won’t, do that. What simply can’t get done, accept it without guilt or worry. Move on.

The mindset of the author looking to market their book can’t settle into negative thoughts or lazy patterns. Don’t give up without trying. Don’t try once and throw in the towel. Keep at it, a little each day. Chip away at the marketing monster and get some successes under your belt. Build up confidence and lay a foundation for growth. This will get easier over time. Have fun with your new experience. See it as an opportunity, not an obligation.

What will free up your mind and time for book marketing? Get help on other aspects of your life and re-budget your time. For instance, stop cleaning your house. Outsource it to a maid
If you can. Instead of going to stores or the supermarket, shop online and get everything delivered. Running too many errands? Can friends, family, spouse, or others help out? Take on fewer projects. Don’t choose this as the time to make home repairs or renovations.

Books don’t sell themselves. It takes time, money, and effort to spread the word to build up your brand. Give yourself a fair chance to break through. Adopt a book marketing mindset.
