ByteDance, the parent company
that owns China-based TikTok, now publishes some books. Given the level of
influence TikTok has in creating best-sellers with its trending viral videos
about books, could TikTok revolutionize book publishing by simply promoting its
own content?
TikTok has 150 million American users. In the
past year, there were 91 billion views of the #BookTok hashtag— up 50 percent
from just a year ago.
So, let’s add a few layers to this. Could this
social media platform, possibly controlled by the Chinese government, start
dictating which of its own books gets promoted?
Now, what if it uses AI bots to pen these books
and then uses more bots to create the illusion that users are sharing and
discussing the book?
We live in a weird world, one where truth, free
speech, and accurate objectivity is under fire from all sides — human and
robotic.
