Interview With Poet Olivia Deadlock

1. What inspired you to write this book? I was sitting in my house one day remembering all sorts of things i had done in my life when these words came into my head and I realized it was a poem. i continued to make up poems from things i had done in my life as well as from my vision of the world and my imagination.

2.What exactly is it about and who is it written for?  It is about fun and happiness, about fear and dread, about love and life, and some about war, history and religion. It is written for a wide audience as there are a lot of subjects in it.

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? I hope they will get an insight into my world and enjoy reading short poems. I call my writing word art because i am painting a picture with words. I want the reader to imagine the poem in pictures.

4.How did you decide on the books title and cover design? I chose the title because there are some very sad poems in the book, about people being trapped in dungeons, I call these people nungeons and the children soup dragons. My son, Yusif Ali, is a graphic designer and he did the art work for the cover. It depicts me as the tree and the hearts are my seven children.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers other than run? I would encourage them to create stories around things which happen in their life and use their imagination to create stories.

6. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book? Yes, I spent 20 years living in the desert in Benghazi Libya and this helped me imagine the sandman poems and the darkest day. I am very interested in crime and a lot of the poems are about what happens to people when they get kidnapped.

7. How would you describe your writing style, which writers or book is your style similar to? I would describe it as word art painting pictures in word form and keeping them short so people can memorize their favorite poems, I think my style of writing is unique and new and i don't think anyone else has the same style.

8.What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? I had to think of rhyming words that still fitted in with the meaning of the poems. I had to depict my thoughts through words and make sense of them.

9.If people can read or buy one book this week or month, why should it be yours? I think my

book is very entertaining and brings a lot of subject matter into people’s lives that they can ponder on and think about. I think there are some lovely poems that people can memorize like we memorize songs. I think it makes a very good present for birthdays or Christmas.
