1. What inspired you to write this book? I was inspired by having a member of my family who is Autistic, and to try and help people understand that autistic people can lead normal and fulfilling lives.
2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for? It is about a schoolboy with dreams and ambitions of flying jets for a career, who grew up in the 1960's before Autism was described in the medical press, when autistic children were not understood and were thought of as difficult. It is written for the parents of autistic children to help them understand that autism does not mean a person cannot achieve, and can be in fact very intelligent.
3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? Entertainment, and an understanding of the condition, and also a realization that, even against all odds, with hard work and determination, people can achieve their dreams.
4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? I wanted something simple, and the image of a child looking to the sky and an airplane flying overhead was perfect. Making it monochrome added an air of the 1960's.
5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!? Work hard, follow your dreams, and never, ever give up!
6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? Difficult question, as I don't really follow the industry. I think readers are interested in books about people and their lives, as they can relate to them. The current trend - in the UK - seems to be one of celebrity and sports start publishing autobiographies, which follow this trend.
7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book? Yes, of growing up in the world of dealing with autism, and of course my work as a flying instructor allowed me to write about the pilot training in an accurate and realistic way.
8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? My style is very realist and simple, but I can't think of any other writers who influenced my at all.
9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? Finding the time (I was still working full time) and also overcoming my domestic situation at that time. I also found that maintaining my belief in myself and the book difficult at times to maintain.
10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? Hopefully as an entertaining read about somebody achieving his ambitions despite facing many difficulties in his life.
