Interview With Author Jacques F. Felix

1. What inspired you to write this book?

My adolescence in Haiti and observing the daily exodus of Haitian youth due to unending political upheaval and economic hardship in Haiti, this piece of realistic fiction is deeply rooted in those personal observations.

2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for?

This narrative explores the themes of survival, loyalty to one's homeland, resilience, and hope, specifically addressing those who hold skeptical views on immigration. This powerful short story invites readers to reflect on the complexities of migration, identity, and pursuit of a better life. Whether you’re interested in social justice, human stories, or simply a compelling read, The Promised Land offers a unique perspective worth exploring!

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book?

I aim for the readers to cultivate a profound sense of empathy towards the struggles of young immigrants and the wider immigrant population.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design?

I was influenced by childhood stories from my mother, Phena Felix (whom the book is dedicated to), about Israel's passage to the Promised Land through trials and tribulations! I sort of see a reflection of that divine journey in the Haitian experience. Therefore, the cover design is intended to instantly engage the readers’ interest!

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!?

Continue to polish your craft is crucial. Now more than ever, the world needs the unique voices of authors like us.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?

The gravitation towards self-publishing is a notable trend, and it's one that I believe indicates a positive shift in this industry.

7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book?

Absolutely! My personal journey and the realities I've lived serve as the primary inspiration for this tale, albeit through a fictional lens, ha-ha.

8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to?

I would say my style is uncomplicated and straightforward. Moreover, I usually aim to immerse my readers in a fantastic world through vivid story telling. I love personifying non-living objects as well!

9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book?

I did not really encounter any challenges; however, the COVID-19 pandemic affected the timing of the publication. It was supposed to be published way earlier.

10. If people could buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?

It should be mine, because my book offers a distinctive outlook that leads to deeper contemplation! You’ve never really read a story like this one before.

About The Author:

I was born in Saint Michel de L’Attalaye, a small town in Haiti. My love for writing and reading blossomed from a very young age. After immigrating to the United States in 2010, I served in the US Military and pursued higher education. I am currently studying law at Howard University School of Law, and I still continue to explore social issues through my writing. The sequel to this book (The Promised Land: Fate of the Twins) will be published by next year. Be on the lookout for it! For more info, please see: Jacques F. Felix | LinkedIn or  Jacques F.
