Is The Best Yet To Come For Authors?


“The best is yet to come,” I texted to my friend, Fred, whom I have known since age five.

I was proud to tell him my blog has surpassed 5,000,000 page views. His response was: “You may have peaked…. Time will tell.”

At first I was hurt, thinking those are just jealous words. After all, he did not even allow me to bask in my accomplishment and praise the hard work that has gone into crafting 5500 posts that account for an estimated three million words (about 50 books of 60,000 words each).

Then, I thought, insecurely, what if he is right, and I should just enjoy the moment with no expectations or promise that things will get better or even stay the same. Nothing is guaranteed.

I moved on from both thoughts to conclude that I will try my best to not only hold onto the blog’s success, but to in fact push it up a notch. In life, you don’t get to just rest on your laurels or you will just watch it go by from the rearview mirror. I plan to write until the day I die and I don’t plan on dying anytime soon.

His words, though perhaps reflective of envy also serve as a cautionary message. I am motivated more so now to make sure that I have not peaked and am still on a rising trajectory. I need to have my voice heard, not just for ego or financial reasons, but because I hope to persuade others to be better at marketing their books, for books can change and improve this world.

My mission is not yet accomplished, but it is nice to look down at the view to see how high I have climbed, believing i have a lot more climbing to do.

Authors should feel the same way about their books and writing. Keep working at your craft and your marketing of it. No matter what you have accomplished thus far, keep your eye on the prize and give it your all in your effort, thought, and execution.
