Is one born with confidence? Or, is it the circumstances an environment in which one is raised that determines their level of confidence? Could a singular event impact one’s level of confidence? Perhaps it’s any and all of the above. I don’t know. Not a therapist. But I’m a book marketer and I do know that all authors need to be confident in their marketing abilities and efforts or they will fall short of their goals. So how do we get authors to feel and act more confidently in what they do to promote and market a book?
1. Acknowledge The Issue.
It’s natural to have fears, insecurities, and
weaknesses. That’s life. No one can be great at everything. Few even excel at
one thing. But you must acknowledge and confront your shortcomings in the
confidence arena and devise a plan to combat it, and turn a negative into an
asset.
2. Seek therapy, coaching, meditation, medication.
Like I said not a doctor or a medical pro. But
there are people who help you overcome fears, anxiety, stress, shyness, or
feelings of inadequacy. See a doctor and explore your solutions.
3. Just decide to be confident. Act as if.
Wake up, brush your
teeth, go through your daily rituals, and then do one new thing. Make a
commitment to being confident. Just approach everything like a confident person
would. Smile. Give firm handshakes. Challenge others. Say things in the
affirmative and not with a question mark. Don’t be quick to apologize or admit
you are wrong. Act like you are in change. It’s all a frame-of-mind posture.
One big game.
4. Be assertive. Take initiative.
Confident people speak first and often. They
don’t wait for permission to speak or act. Create opportunities- don’t wait for
them to come to you.
5. Keep your fears to yourself.
Never let them see you sweat. You are under no
obligation to admit you have doubts, fears, or insecurities. Keep it to
yourself. And if they don’t know, they don’t exist. Project an image of whom
you want to be-and you become it.
6. Do things to build up your confidence.
What would make you feel
more confident? A change in your wardrobe? Lose 20 pounds? Learn more about
something? Get answers to your questions? Okay, just do it. Really, it’s that
easy. Who is stopping you? Get rid of the crutches.
7. Read self-help-books but only a few.
If it’s a good self-help book, you’ll grow,
learn, heal, and gain confidence. Read a few more to reinforce and build on
what you learned. Read any more and all you do is reinforce there’s a problem
or doubt that plagues you, There’s a time to explore, question, study, whine,
cry, etc.-and then it’s time to put into practical use the tools to display
confidence.
8. Be confident, not just show confidence.
So, it’s very important to appear confident. But
it’s also necessary to actually feel grounded and confident in your abilities
to make stuff happen. Others can feel that energy, enthusiasm, and strength-and
so can you. Will yourself to greater heights.
9. Don’t think it’s beyond you.
Ask, why not you?
You don’t need money, a degree, or permission to be confident. Believe you can
do it, that you are worthy, and that your book is terrific. People will then
see you the way you want to be seen.
10. Have a nothing-to-lose mentality.
Once you remove the pressure to succeed and just
have fun with life, you develop a confidence that gets you through anything. So,
what if you fail. You’ll get another chance tomorrow. Act in *a relaxed way,
taking it seriously but not acting like everything is life and death. It’s not.
Imagine the worst. Okay, do you see yourself coming back from that, from being
able to dance, travel, eat, and enjoy friends? Of course you do. Act with a
knowing belief that you can overcome any trauma or drama-this will give you
confidence to succeed.
So, are you convinced you can do this? Try it. You have nothing to lose. Your goal is to get your book seen and read. Do what it takes, including feeling and displaying confidence. It will get you where you need to go.
