Why Writers Need To Celebrate – And Be Celebrated

Of late, it seems like a lot of celebrating is going on. June brings weddings, graduations, Father’s Day, and championship sports victories like The Belmont Stakes, French Open, and Stanley Cup. Isn’t it time we celebrate writers — and for authors to celebrate their writings?

Today, 5000 books will be minted in America. In just a few days’ time some one billion words will be published. The process will repeat itself a few days later. But for all of those books coming into the world, how many will have a party thrown for the author? How will the author celebrate his or her creation?

Many women who give birth get a push present — plus a baby! What does an author, who feels like they just gave birth to a fresh life, get?

Book publishers used to throw launch parties for many of their leading authors or for books that were anticipated to be big. Now, due to budget cuts and a huge change in how books are marketed and sold, you don’t see as many parties being thrown. The economics just aren’t there. The vast majority of books released today will be self-published, thus, there is no publisher to throw a party.

Should authors throw their own party? Should a friend or family member cater the party? Or, is the very act of getting a book into print and on screen its own reward and celebration?

Authors, on average, will not sell more than a few hundred copies of their book. They will flounder at marketing their book. Many will not even see their book carried by traditional bookstores. Authors hear “no” far more often than “yes” and most often hear nothing at all when it comes to getting book reviews, media coverage, social media attention, speaking gigs, or generating book sales opportunities. The least we could do is throw a party to celebrate the writing of a book, the creation of new ideas and worlds, and the stringing together of thoughts never expressed before — right?

Writers need to feel appreciated. They need praise and acknowledgement. They want validation and approval. We all do, but especially those who put themselves out there, with naked souls on display for others to judge. Writers pour their hearts out on paper, their pains and joys and fears and dreams are given a spotlight that others can just chew apart.

Writers need to celebrate who they are and what they do. And we should all honor them for trying to enlighten, empower, entertain, and inform a society that still needs to evolve and grow into one of peace, love, and democracy.
