Books Are Soaring In America

“One of our oldest forms of entertainment remains relevant nearly 600 years after Gutenberg,” said Kristen McLean in a recent Publishers Weekly article. Apparently, book sales in the US are strong, perhaps better than ever.

The number of books sold reached a record 990 million units in 2021. Print book sales have risen in each of the past eight consecutive years. E-book unit sales are only at two-thirds of their peak in 2013 (244 million units then vs. 164,000,000 now).

Less than 20 years ago, in 2004, sales from backlist books made up 51% of the marketplace. Now, they account for more than two-thirds (68%). It will only rise, as the marketplace adds to the backlist pile at a record rate.

People read a ton – magazines, newspapers, blogs, newsletters, websites, white papers, textbooks, manuals, purchased books, and free books. Our society consumes content like crazy – not to mention films, videos, social media, television, radio, etc. So, to see book sales rise amidst an information explosion is very, very encouraging.
